CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

The actions taken to create an environment that supports and facilitates academic and social–
emotional learning.

A term used by teachers to describe the process of ensuring that learning runs smoothly despite
disruptive behavior by students.

Classroom management is not just for your sanity. It is for the good of your students too.

“Classroom management is not teaching; it is a necessary condition to teaching”.

PRINCIPLES OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT (Sue Cowley)

1. Be Definite
Know what you want and expect in the classroom.

2. Be Aware
Children will misbehave. Things will go wrong. That is assured.

3. Be Calm and Consistent

Yes, their behavior can raise your blood pressure and will test your patience severely.

4. Give them Structure

Tell them in details your expectations and how you want them to behave in your class.

5. Be positive!
Always be on the lookout for good behavior and give specific praises to those students.

6. Be interested
Understand your students. Be genuinely interested about their lives.

7. Be flexible
Trust your instincts and judgment when the situation calls for some flexibility.

8. Be Persistent
Do not give up on your students. Eventually, you will win and even if you don’t, do not take it too
hard on yourself.

TECHNIQUES FOR BETTER CLASSROOM CONTROL

1. Focus attention on entire class

2. Don’t talk over student chatter
3. Silence can be effective. Use softer voice so students really have to listen to what you’re saying
4. Direct your instruction so that students know what is going to happen
5. Monitor groups of students to check progress
6. Move around the room so students have to pay attention more readily
7. Give students non-verbal cues
8. Engage in low profile intervention of disruptions
9. Make sure classroom is comfortable and safe
10. Over plan your lessons to ensure you fill the period with learning activities
11. Come to class prepared
12. Show confidence in your teaching
13. Learn student names as quickly as possible

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT IS CLOSELY LINKED TO ISSUES OF:

A. RESPECT
It is a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or
achievements.

“Everyone should be respected as an individual, but no one idolized.”

-Albert Einstein
B. DISCIPLINE
It is a training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character

“It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action, and discipline that
enabled us to follow through.”
-Zig Ziglar

C. MOTIVATION
It is defined as a driving force or internal energy which drives a person to do something in order to
achieve something.

“A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.”
-Ayn Rand
Types of Motivation

1. INTRINSIC
It refers to motivation that comes from inside an individual rather than from any external or
outside rewards, such as money or grades.

2. EXTRINSIC
It refers to motivation that comes from outside an individual. The motivating factors are
external, or outside, rewards such as money or grades.
