Rationale and Background (Danielson 1b: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students)

The purpose of this lesson is to allow students to work together to act out one of the stories we
read as a class in the beginning of the unit. They will prepare and practice playing their roles
for parents and caregivers to come into the classroom and see for our end of the unit class
party. The students are familiar with working together and learning in group settings.

II. Lesson Objectives (Danielson 1c: Setting Instructional Objectives)

1. TLWBAT work together in three different groups to prepare and perform Jumanji, The
Polar Express, or The Garden of Adbul Gasazi for the end of the unit class party where
they will perform the stories for parents and caregivers (Standard - 9.1.3.B).

IV. Procedures (Danielson 1a: Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy) (Danielson
1e: Designing Coherent Instruction) (Danielson 3a: Communicating with Students) (3b Using
Questioning and Discussion Techniques) (Danielson 3c Engaging Students in Learning)

I will tell the students that as a special surprise for the end of the unit class party, they will
perform the three books we focused on in the unit for their families! I will ask the students if
they have ever acted like they were in a movie or a book before to get them thinking about
what it means to act a story out.

A. Lesson Body

1. First I will divide the students into three groups based on mixed abilities
2. I will tell the students their groups and allow them to discuss which book they would like
to perform
3. If two groups want to perform the same book, I will decide by flipping a coin
4. The groups will be allowed to break up and work together to decide who will play what
role, and begin discussing possible props and costume ideas
5. The students will all get a paper copy of the story they are acting out so they can
highlight lines and focus on their roles
6. The students can use the ipads to watch author interviews about the books to get inside
information on the background of the story that may help them in their performance
7. The students should also budget their time to discuss props needed
8. Once the students have roles assigned, they should begin practicing their lines in their
group, and making sure they know what they are doing.
9. After about two days of practicing in class the students should be ready to perform
10. The students should have already brought in extra costumes and small props as well.
11. The students will be given time through the day to rehearse their performance fully with
costumes and props before the end of the unit party.
12. On the day of the class party, the students will rehearse one more time, and work out an
other issues in their performance
2
13. Each group will take turns performing in front of the parents and teachers for the party

B. Simplification and Extensions (Strategies for Differentiated Instruction) (Danielson 3e:

Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness)

1. A gifted child can be the group facilitator, and help students memorize lines, choose
costumes and prepare their part.
2. An exceptional child may choose the part they want to perform, if they do not want to
perform they may choose another way to contribute to the performance.
3. An ELL learner can have the script in their language and in English.

C. Closure/Conclusion

To conclude this lesson, the parents and caregivers will be allowed to give the students
positive feedback on their performances and ask the students questions about things they
have learned during the unit.

V. Communicating with Families/Homework Assignment/Independent Practice (Danielson 4c:

Communicating with Families)

I will make a homeschool connection by allowing the students to bring materials from home,
and by posting videos of the performances on the class website.

VI. Evaluation

Formative:
To assess the students, the child will perform and act out of the stories from thebeginning of
the unit in a group. The parents and caregivers of the children will be invited tothe class to see
the groups performances. OBJ#1.

Summative:
To assess the students, the groups will be monitored to make sure they are working together,
and assessment of performance of the story content will be included OBJ#1.

A. Reflective Practice/Self-Evaluation (To be completed after the lesson is taught) (Danielson

4a: Reflecting on Teaching)

Reflect on your teaching experience and answer these questions:

1. What were two strengths of the lesson?

2. What are two areas of the lesson that need improvement?
3. What would I do differently, if I were to reteach this lesson?
4. What biases, if any, existed in the materials, activities, language, or interactions with
children?
5. Did anything surprise me?

Be sure to attach all resources such as handouts and teacher-created materials.
