End to Homosexual Injustice
In a world where our rights are protected
by law, there remains one major issue of
discrimination that needs to be addressed -
homosexuality. Homosexuality is the state of
being sexually attracted to persons of the same
sex. The prevalent question now is: Is it really
against the natural order of things or just
deemed unacceptable because it does not
conform to the social norm? The presence of
homosexuals in society is an undeniable truth
and consequently, people must learn to accept
and embrace their uniqueness.
To those who think that homosexuality
is a choice, a case study has revealed that
people are inherently homosexual and it is not
directly rooted in external influences but rather
develops independently in oneself. Moreover, it
is obviously unjust to judge someone on
something they have no control over. With all
the pressure society exerts, choosing to
become a homosexual sounds completely
ridiculous.
Gender stereotyping contradicts to the
law that every person is free to express
himself. Since the beginning of history,
homosexuality was considered unlawful not
until the advent of democracy has triggered
activists to campaign for respect and equality
among all sexes. While countries like Russia
still support anti-gay laws, one must note that
as homosexuality continues to be a
stereotyped lifestyle, more conflicts will stem
forth and further lead to an inevitable divide
among different sexual preferences.
Societal discrimination of gays is most
likely to cause suicidal attempts, depression,
fear and other negative consequences as
suggested by a 1989 study by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services.
The increasing rates of suicides among LGBT
Youth has less to do with their sexual
orientation, but everything to do with the unjust
societal responses they face everyday.
Bullying and harassment are two of the most
emotionally driven and pervasive issues that
isolate gays from family and peers. This
abandons them from their loved ones and may
result to severe psychological problems.
Although the existence of homosexuals
should be respected, the fundamental
teachings of the Church remain to be its
biggest adversary. The rejection of
homosexual behavior is clearly depicted in
God’s destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
caused by their immoral and unnatural acts of
lust. The divine law is therefore violated and
until now, it continues to be an endless dispute
between the LGBT community and the Church.
Homosexuality is a pressing reality that
can no longer be left unresolved. In order for
the world to be completely free from sufferings
and injustice, respect and acceptance must
transcend among all corners of the earth,
regardless of sexual preference or orientation.
