SLOGAN POST MARKS OF INDISA

(PRE INDEPENDENCE PERIOD)

Slogan is a party catchword or an advertising catch-phrase. A postal slogan is a short

catch-phrase used by post office on postal articles for Government propaganda or for
advertising or commemorating a particular event, a comparatively modern form of post
marking comprising “tense, brief & pithy phrases” incorporated in a special die (a mechanical
development of the old-time duplex hand stamp).

In India a particular slogan was used from one post office only and sometimes another
particular slogan was used throughout the country. When a slogan was used by different post
offices, different size, spacing, letters and patterns were used, because in Pre Independence era
these slogans were not prepared at one-time or place. Slogan post marks were introduced in
india in 1917. In pre independence era, slogans were used to cover post office propaganda for
buying defense, case or national saving certificates, or use of “Telephones”. They were also
used for advertising the exhibitions, the sale of health T.B. seals, supporting Indian industries &
Jubilee Funds etc. During the second World War, the P & T Department accorded wide publicity
through postal slogans for joining A.R.P. and maintaining National Security.

The slogan post marks are applied both as canceller as well as delivery marks. But
Sometime they are also applied as a supplementary post marks along with canceller delivery
post marks.
