Lithium-ion & Advanced Batteries
New battery technologies with new advantages are having higher presence in the market
Conext family is able to interface with all of them through different pre-configured types…

Lead Acid and Other Conventional Batteries Li-ion Batteries

+ Higher power to energy ratio and overload (discharge) + Higher cycle life (~3000 cycles @90%DoD)

+ Lower capex + Lower total cost of ownership

+ No BMS interface with inverter required + Higher energy density

- Lower charge rate + Higher round trip efficiency (~95%)

- Lower cycle life (~1500 cycles @80%DoD) + Better utilization and depth of discharge

- Higher total cost of ownership + Higher charge rate

- Higher maintenance - Requires BMS to ensure safe operation of the batteries

- Lower energy density - Higher capex

- Lower round trip efficiency (~80%) - Lower power to energy ratio and limited overload
(discharge)

Operation with Lithium and other Advanced Batteries
TYPE 1 LEAD-ACID REPLACEMENT / OPEN LOOP (I)

▪ Lead-Acid Replacement are batteries designed to operate as drop-in replacement for lead-acid

▪ There is no necessity to interchange information with in-built BMS:

▪ No communication with BMS

▪ BMS has the whole responsibility for battery safe operation (if something fails it trips)
▪ For better estimation of SoC, recommended to use Conext Battery Monitor

▪ Operation of Conext devices are based on fixed settings:

▪ Always within safety tolerance ranges (conservative settings)

▪ Normally recommended by battery manufacturer
▪ We can study case by case

▪ Some examples: Simpliphy, Fortress, Saft, Blueplanet, GCL…

Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 17

Operation with Lithium and other Advanced Batteries
TYPE 2 ADAPTIVE SETTINGS / CLOSED LOOP (I)

▪ BMS communication with inverter: SoC, Voltage, Temperature, Max Charge current, Max Discharge
Current… that may change (based on operating conditions)

▪ The communication is used to dynamically update charging/discharging settings. In this case the
battery safe operation is guaranteed by both, BMS & inverter.

▪ There are different communication possibilities

▪ Xanbus (XW+ & XW Pro): Discover

▪ CAN (XW Pro + Conext Gateway): PYLONTECH, WECO, GCL
▪ Modbus (XW Pro + Conext Gateway): BYD

▪ Some examples: Discover, Pylontech(*), Weco(*) (in process), BYD (i.p.)…

(*) Also possible to work in open loop

Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 18
Operation with Lithium and other Advanced Batteries
TYPE 2 ADAPTIVE SETTINGS / CLOSED LOOP (II)

Advantages of Closed Loop

▪ Easier setup and configuration using charge regulation directly from the BMS (no need to configure
charge settings as part of inverter commissioning – dynamic adaptation to BMS)

▪ Better utilization of the full range of battery capacity

▪ Better utilization of the maximum available charge / discharge current based on ambient conditions
e.g. temperature

▪ Improved state transitions and charge regulation using the SOC information from the BMS

▪ Improved regulation to avoid nuisance tripping by the battery BMS (as we’re adapting to BMS)

▪ Improved AC coupling (SoC is more stable than voltage for this control)

(*) Also possible to work in open loop

Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 19
Advantage of SoC Control
▪ Li-ion battery voltage is flat through most of the SOC range

▪ Li-ion Controls based on SOC provide significantly improved accuracy for state transitions (e.g. Re-
charge, Grid Support, Load Shave, AC Coupled Charge Regulation)

▪ Control based on battery voltage works well for lead-acid with more linear slope of voltage vs SOC

Working with SoC Control

on Li-ion batteries allows
as improved energy usage,
as battery status is more
accurate

ConextTM XW Pro Applications
PriorityPower – prioritizes usage of power from solar charge controller before purchasing power from the utility.

ParallelPower – supplements AC Grid input helping to avoid peak utility charges (by Peak Load Shaving)

GenSupport – assists an AC Genset input supporting heavy loads

PowerCoupling – AC Coupling uses Active Frequency Shift to curtail the output of compatible PV inverters, maintaining the
balance between generation and consumption. Only possible when hybrid inverters work as grid forming (NO AC INPUT).

GridSell – allows to sell the excess of energy to the grid when allowed by utility (only XW+).

Other functionalities, like loadshedding, are possible using Aux Port and other devices… just ask!

Multi-Unit System
Single phase and 3-phase stacking, so we can
group XW Pro units together operating as a
single power source
▪ Modular architecture able to supply more power than a
single XW Pro unit

▪ All the units are connected to the same AC bus

▪ Customized design based on requirements

▪ Different types and power rates, depending on each
application…

▪ … and in the same way as single XW Pro systems:

▪ Grid-tied or Off-grid applications

▪ With or without solar generation

Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 36

Multi-Unit Design Considerations
• From XW Pro architecture… internal relays are rated 60A, these
relays limit the amount of power flowing through AC1 or AC2 ports

• When several units are in parallel…

In AC pass-thorugh the units are connected to the same AC source and share fairly even currents to
the loads. All relays operate synchronized in the event of grid qualification or misqualification, but we
cannot assure that all close or open at the exact time…
Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 37
Multi-Unit Design Considerations
• Due to this, first to close or first to open has to manage the overall load current while the others close
or open…

• If this overall load current is > 60A, this will deteriorate or even fuse the relay

• This potential hazardous situation, limits max amount of pass-through current rate in Multi-Unit
configuration to 60A per phase(normally 2 units in parallel per phase):
• 1PH: 60A x 230V = 13.8kW FOR LARGER SYSTEMS ALTERNATIVES…
• 3PH: 60A x 230V x 3 = 41.4kW
Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 38
Multi-Unit Design Considerations
• We use external connection/disconnection means…
• As an example, on 1PH, we use an automatic transfer switch managed by Master XW Pro unit

Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 39

Multi-Unit Design Considerations
• An example, on 3PH, we use an external contactor
managed by Master XW Pro unit
