Narrative

On October 31, 2019, Youth Alliance for Health Reform joined by Lingkod E.R.-UST and
St. Lukes Medicine Student Council, in cooperation with Philippine Jesuit Prison Service
Foundation Inc. organized a medical mission in New Bilibid Prison, Muntinlupa. The participants
of the event are an all-volunteers group from different organisations and schools. This includes
a licensed medical doctor, members from the aforementioned organizations, as well as several
students from the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and licensed physical therapists. The
event was open to the public and undergraduates and professionals may volunteer by
contacting any of the social media accounts of Youth Alliance for Health Reform, the main
organizer of the medical mission, hence the diversity of the group. The medical mission was
limited to only the inmates in the Medium Security Compound, gadgets were not allowed inside
the compound, and only pictures from outside the gates could be taken.

Before starting, volunteers met up in the office of the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service
Foundation Inc., where the group was oriented by Mr. Gene Junsan Alolosan about a few
reminders before going inside the compound. After the orientation, the group was led to the
entrance of the compound where their bodies were checked before going inside. Within the
compound, the event proper was held in one of the schools, and the program includes a free
seminar and a free consultation which took place simultaneously. Majority of the inmates were
listening to the seminar while others were already being checked at the same time. The
program started with a short introduction, then immediately followed by the first talk about
Tuberculosis led by Joshua Oliveros and Ivanah Tupaz. The next talk featured Communicable
Skin Diseases by Marian Rodelyn and Vince Ambion, then ended with a talk on Human
Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome by Benjamin Santiago. Time
was allotted for questions from the inmates after every question. After all the discussions and
consultations, the volunteers were led back to the office of the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service
Foundation Inc., where they were debriefed and dismissed.
