3. For this assignment I chose to evaluate Khan Academy for teaching kindergarteners how
to count. It is a fairly simple site to navigate, you must first create an account and after
that you have access to videos and practice questions to any subject for any grade level. I
simply searched “kindergarten counting” and 100’s of lesson/practice options appeared
for me to choose from. The unit I selected was Counting and Place Value for
kindergarten, it is broken up into a series of short lessons. Included in the lesson is one or
two short videos that teach the topic and show how to do the activity, then there is a short
quiz at the end to make sure the child has mastered the information before moving on. I
think this is a great tool for teachers and students to use. However, I think a
kindergartener could not do this on their own. To ensure quality learning is taking place
they would need the supervision or assistance of an adult or parent. A child may need
help operating the computer and even learning who to do the activities. While there are
videos to explain who to complete the lessons, they are not exactly child friendly. Also
the videos are more to show you how to do the activity, not necessarily teaching the child
how to count. To improve this resource, I would make the layout more appropriate for a
child to use. When you log onto the site it does not look very inviting, like something that
would grab a child’s attention and get them excited about learning. Overall, I think this is
a good resource and can be beneficial if used appropriately.
