The shepherd compares his love for the nymph with the life that he lives so he
offers her gifts for her physical needs, as all he knows as a mortal being is
materialistic and temporary. Thus, the nymph reminds the shepherd, his gifts only
symbolize decay and the passing of time: they soon break, soon wither, and are
soon forgotten.

When the shepherd compares his love for the nymph with the life that he lives, he
offers her gifts, for everything he knows as a mortal being is materialistic and
temporary. (physiological)
Lines 9-16: Thus, the nymph reminds the shepherd, his gifts only symbolize decay
and the passing of time: they soon break, soon wither, and are soon forgotten.
While in folly such gifts may seem to exist always in their perfect, ripe
state, to a reason-possessing and time-haunted. (physiological)
Lines 1-8: By this, the nymph means human beings who, burdened with the
consciousness of passing time, are subject to the anxiety of future misfortunes. In
the shepherds evocation, no such anxieties can exist because no such timeless
world can exist: his vision, like Keatss Grecian urn, is only a product of the
imagination. (safety)
The nymph say she actually would be willing to run off with the shepherd if she
thought that their youthful enthusiasm could last. (love/belonging - social needs)
When she replies, in me no means can move, it seems to be the nymphs final
rejection of the shepherd. She has become set in her mind and in her heart. She has
not only convinced the shepherd of her rejection, but she has convinced herself as
well. In the end, she once again yields to the onward progression of time, allowing
all to grow old, to change, and to wither away just as it was meant to be. (self-
actualization)
The nymph admits to the human need to believe in timelessness and immortality. At
the same time, however, she must acknowledge that reason prohibits such belief,
which it dismisses as folly. Self-actualizing people are self-aware, concerned
with personal growth, less concerned with the opinions of others, and interested in
fulfilling their potential.
