Pre-Assessment for Science Unit:

The pre-assessment was given to the students on April 24, 2020. The students were given
a pre-test on the states of matter. This assessment had students demonstrate their understanding
of the three states of matter, and classifying shapes into solid, liquids, and gases. The teacher
candidate used the Promethean board to display the questions on the board and to read through
them for the students. When implementing the pre-assessment, the teacher candidate asked the
students to take out their chrome books and sign onto Google Classrooms and to open “Matter
Pre-test.” The teacher candidate informed them that this is not for a grade, that she would just
like to see what they know on the states of matter. While the students were taking their pre-
assessment, the teacher candidate walked around the room to see if the students needed any
support or help reading the questions.
The pre-assessment results showed that thirteen out of fourteen students know that matter
takes up space, but the students struggled to comprehend solids, liquids, and gases. 13 out 14
students got #1 correct, 6 out 14 students got #2 correct, 5 out of 14 students got #3 correct, 7
out 14 students got #4 correct, 7 out 14 students #5 correct, 4 out of 14 students got #6 correct, 6
out of 14 students got #7 correct, 6 out 14 students got #8 correct, 5 out 14 students got #9
correct, and 0 out 14 students got #10 correct. These results showed that none of the students
know what evaporation means and have little to no understanding on chemical and physical
changes. Student number one was able to get 1 out of 10 correct on the pre-assessment. The
student knows that matter takes up space, but needs support and practice when learning about
solids, liquids, and gases. Student number 2 was able to get 6 out 10 correct on the pre-
assessment. This shows that student has been exposed and has prior knowledge on the three
states of matter but will still receive support throughout each lesson. Both students will receive
cue cards during the unit and will be able to learn through hands-on experiences. Based on the
pre-assessment results, the teacher candidate concluded that the students need more exposure to
the three states of matter through hands-on activities in order to complete a summative
assessment at the end of the unit.
