TITLE

Attitude Towards The Study Habits Of Students From General

Mamerto Natividad High School

INTRODUCTION

According to Acheaw (2004), study habits are well-

planned and deliberate patterns of study which has attained

a form of consistency on the part of the students towards

understanding academic subjects and passing examinations.

Study habits are mainly external factors that facilitate the

study process such as sound study routines that include how

often a student engage in studying sessions, review the

material, self-evaluate, rehears explaining the material,

and studying in a conducive environment (Credé, 2008). A

good study habit is a prerequisite for good academic

performance. Students with poor study habits who receive

poor grades in schools, get easily distracted and

frustrated. Success as the name implies is wished for by

everybody but it does not easily come by on a mere platter

of gold; one must work for it through hard work and

diligence.

As the year level of students in school becomes higher,

their study habits differ from time to time. The kind of

1
study habits they have, shows the differences or

improvements in how they become skilled and earnest about

learning new things. Studying does not only include the

preparation of students to excel in class but also the

reinforcements of the lessons already taught. It is merely

reviewing and committing to mind new information.

Furthermore, study habits can be derived as buying out a

dedicated scheduled and un-interrupted time to apply one’s

self to the task of learning. Without it, one does not grow

and become self-limiting in life. Truly, it plays a very

important role on their academic performances.

The effects of study habits on student’s academic

performances rely on how they practiced their own study

habits. It is actually not difficult to acquire excellent

and powerful studying habits and techniques. Many of these

are actually common sense and the key is the application of

strong study tools and not actually in the tools altogether.

What appears as simple can actually be plain challenging. In

addition, students should still consider some factors that

may be considered for studying effectively in improving his

or her study habits. These factors include; a good place for

studying, enough time to rest, a fixed schedule and setting

out a definite goal.

2
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Due to the increasing nature of poor academic

performance of students, many questions had been raised by

teachers, parents and students as to why students perform so

poorly. For an excellent performance, there is need for the

student to form good study habits. It is clear from

indications that most secondary school students have poor

study habits which might lead to poor academic performance.

Because there are several factors as to why students have

different study habits which results to a higher or lower

academic performance, the proponent of this research aims to

identify if the attitude toward study habits of students

depend on their gender or sex, one of the strong factors

that might affect the study habits of the students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Specifically, this study intends to know whether the

gender or sex of the students affect their attitude towards

study habits which often result to what will be their

academic performance on school. This study will help those

employees and individuals involved and concerned in the

academe and teaching environment to focus on the most

prominent factor that directly affects the attitude of the

3
students towards study habits. In addition, this study can

also be used to a research methodology subject.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

There are many factors that might affect the attitude

of students towards study habits but this study focuses

mainly on one of the factors that might affect the attitude

of students towards study habits which is the gender or sex

of the students.

The respondents of the study were limited only with the

students of General Mamerto Natividad High School.

Respondents are students from different sections and year

levels in the school. The said school is located at Brgy.

Poblacion, General Mamerto Natividad, Nueva Ecija. The

entire variables and data enumerated herein were directly

gathered from the respondents on March 13 to 17, 2017 from

the said school.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

 Study Habits- it is the habitual practices one uses to

help them study and learn. Good study habits can help

students achieve and/or maintain good grades.

 Attitude- the way you feel about something or someone,

or a particular feeling or opinion.

4
 Conducive Environment- it is a place far from both

physical intimidation and emotional frustration, which

allows for a free exchange of ideas.

 Reinforcements- the action of strengthening or

encouraging something. It is a way to learn and

remember things, like a student who repeats the facts

he has studied for test over and over, or the way we

praise children when they share their toys or say

please and thank you.

 Academe- is the community and scholarly environment

within an institution of higher education and it's more

often called "academia."

 Prerequisite- it is a thing that is required as a prior

condition for something else to happen or exist.

 Academic Performance- is the outcome of education — the

extent to which a student, teacher or institution has

achieved their educational goals.

METHODOLOGY

The proponent of this study used primary data by

gathering information directly on the respondents. These

primary data gathered were classified as both qualitative

and quantitative data. In terms of sampling techniques, the

researcher used random sampling wherein all the students

5
studying at General Mamerto Natividad High School had an

equal chance of being selected as the sample. When it comes

to method used in the collection of data, the proponent used

the Indirect or Questionnaire method. The proponent had

prepared fifteen questions properly arranged with two

choices of answers; yes or no. The total yes and no answers

of the students will be counted and their total yes scores

will be ranked into three categories. These three categories

will determine what type of study habits they have. If the

student’s yes answers ranges from 0-5 only, the respondent

will fall on having poor study habits; if the student’s yes

answers ranges from 6-10, the respondent will fall on having

good study habits but still needs improvement; and if the

student’s yes answers ranges from 11-15, the respondent will

be ranked for having excellent study habits. Through these

techniques and methods, the researcher can easily form clear

and organized data for the testing of hypothesis.

The statistical analysis or tool used in this study was

the Chi-Square test. It is the most applicable tool for this

study since the proponent is testing independence of one

variable from another variable which is the sex or gender of

the students and their attitude towards study habits.

PRESENTATION OF DATA

6
The following tables show the total yes scores of the

male and female respondents on the questionnaire. The total

female respondents are 47 and the total male respondents are

27 with overall total of 74 respondents.

Based on the tables shown above, the proponent of this

study had arranged the scores depending on their sex and

divided their scores into three categories. 0-5 scores will

fall on having poor study habits, 6-10 will fall on having

good study habits but needs improvement, and 11-15 will fall

on having excellent study habits. The table now has been

arranged as follows:

CONCLUSION

The proponent of this study therefore concludes the

following:

1. The attitude towards study habits does depend on the

sex.

2. Sex or gender is one of the factors that affect the

attitude of the students towards study habits.

3. Most of the students from General Mamerto Natividad

are in the middle level when it comes on identifying the

10
level of their study habits, meaning they have good study

habits but still needs improvement to have excellent study

habits.

4. Most of the female respondents are on the middle

level and upper level when it comes on attitude toward study

habits, meaning they have good and excellent study habits

which are implication that they are much disciplined on

studying.

5. Most of the male respondents are on the middle level

and lower level when it comes on attitude toward study

habits, meaning they have good and poor study habits which

are implication that they are not much disciplined on

studying.

6. The findings of this study will surely help those

employees and individuals involved in the academe or

teaching environment to focus on the sex of students

especially the male students who have mostly poor study

habits to help them improve their study habits and

strategies.

RECOMMENDATION

The proponent of this study recommends the following:

11
1. Future researcher/s should identify other factors

other than sex or gender of students in order to know the

most prominent factor that directly affects the attitude of

students towards study habits.

2. Teachers, parents as well as students should

identify and learn good study habits and find ways and means

of enhancing them among students themselves.

3. Teachers should focus on the male students in order

to help them become much disciplined on building and

learning excellent study strategies and habits.

4. Personnel in the academe or teaching environment can

use data from this study to be able to help their students

on achieving excellent academic performance in school.
