CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Problem and its Background

Good grade matters. It simply signifies how a student is performing well in class either oral

or written. Attaining good symbolic representation for a performance means having a great level

of achievement that could possibly put a student on the top performing lists. Basically, if a

student got a grade of 85 and above, it would be a great achievement for them. Meanwhile, a

grade below 80 or 75 is considered a big failure. Changes in grades can affect student’s interest

to learn more and to extend his or her horizons further.

For most of the learners, it is not hard to deny that having differences in grades among their

peers lead them to compare it from one another. If one got the highest general average, of

course that student becomes the top of the class. Otherwise, if one got the lowest, that student

will be at the bottom. This sorting of top and least performing students has an impact on

students’ enthusiasm with regards to their studies.

Having good general average is essential for a student to pass the whole semester and be

eligible for admission to the next grade or year level. This means that they have thrived to pass

all the subjects and have proven of being academically competent. Maintaining the spot and

being able to be on the top 10 best performing in class is an additional fulfillment. It can give a

student a feeling of satisfaction, sense of pride, boost of guts, and upliftment of enthusiasm in

studying. However, those who do not meet their goals to be one of the top performing students

can possibly have a sense of perseverance to pursue their aims or sometimes letting go and

giving up on it.
Last June 7, 2016, the Department of Education (DepEd) the DO 36, s. 2016 or the Policy

and Guidelines on Awards and Recognition for the K to 12 Basic Education Program which

states:

1. “In line with the implementation of Republic Act No. 10533, otherwise known as

Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (K to 12 Law), the Department of Education

(DepEd) is adopting the enclosed Policy and Guidelines on Awards and Recognition for the

K to 12 Basic Education Program.”

2. These awards have been designed to formally recognize the outstanding performance

and achievement of learners in academics, leadership, and social responsibility, among

other aspects of student progress and development. These awards are given to encourage

learners to strive for excellence and to become proactive members of the school

community.”

Academic standing for most of the high school students is used to quantitatively determine

academic success. Class rank is also often a considerable component in college admission.

Also, committees selecting students to be awarded with scholarship consider class rank or

academic excellence.

The system involving class ranking inevitably result to a competition. It may challenge

students and motivate them to do more studies, to work harder and achieve heights. On the

other hand, some who do not meet their goals to be on the top performing lists often loss their

enthusiasm in studying and neglect school works.

Psychology shows that if a student receives low grades continuously, he or she may feel

out of track and sometimes may quit education. (EdSys, 2015).Low grades resulting to the

downfall of academic standing can make a student feel inferior to their classmates making them

depressed.
The researchers noticed the difference between the performances of the top performing

students and the low and average performing students of Humanities and Social Sciences class

that lead them to study and interpret the influence of academic standing on the students’ daily

performance.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine and interpret the influence of academic standing on

students’ daily performance.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. Is academic standing an influential factor that causes improvement on students’ daily

performance?

2. How does low academic standing influence students’ effort and motivation?

3. How does high academic standing affect students’ effort and motivation in studying?

Definition of Terms

To avoid the occurrence of misinterpretation, the following terms used in this study were

defined.

Academic Standing. Also known as class ranking, it refers to the academic achievement of the

students attained through their efforts and perseverance.

Student’s Daily Performance. This means the execution of an action made by the student to

accomplish school works or activities.

Grades. It denotes symbolic representation for a performance and the level of study that is

completed by the student and indicates how students perform in class.

Grade Point Average (GPA). This is the overall grade for the whole semester or quarter that

reflects students’ whole performance for the school year.

Significance of the Study

School Heads. The results of this study would be beneficial to school heads for this will

serve as a baseline data to assess the influences of academic standing (success or failure) to

students’ motivation or perseverance. These will serve as basis to encourage the students to

strive harder to achieve better grade point average.

Teachers. Because of the possibility of positive and negative influences of academic

standing to student’s efforts and learning behavior, teachers should constantly encourage their

students to pursue and never loose motivation toward their studies.

Parents. Parents are expected to always give their full moral support to their children on

whatever academic standing they may achieve. Parents should support their children when they

succeed and support them even more when they failed. In that way, their children would attain

increased motivation and self-esteem.

Students. It is assumed that through the results of this study, students, whether they

succeed or not, in their academic standing, would unleash their highest potential and always do

their best to achieve the best of their academic performance.

Future Researchers. The results of this study will serve as a reference and guide to

those students and future researchers who want to study the same topic but want to change or

add specific details. As a result, they will be aware where to focus on.
Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is focused on the academic standing of Grade 11 HUMSS students in LNHS,

and its influences to students’ daily performance. It was conducted on the second semester of

the School Year 2017-2018.

In conducting the study, the researchers will gather information and facts through

questionnaire and interview, wherein the researchers ask the participants regarding the

research questions of the study. This study focused on the influences of academic standing to

students’ daily performance, be it positive or negative in relation to their motivation and efforts.

This study catered only Grade 11 HUMSS students in Leuteboro National High School.
