Lesson/Topic: Statistics Defined and Collecting Data

Competency: The learner explains the importance of statistics
Introduction:
Statistics is the study and manipulation of data, including ways to gather, review, analyze, and
draw conclusions from data. The two major areas of statistics are descriptive and inferential statistics.
Statistics can be used to make better-informed business and investing decisions.
Lesson Objective/s:
(1) Define and recognized the importance of statistics
(2) Identify the appropriate technique in getting a sample and the best method used in
collecting statistical data
(3) Appreciate the importance of statistics
(4) apply statistics in daily life

Key Concept
- The branch of mathematics that deals with the study of defining a problem, and collecting, organizing,
analyzing, and interpreting data for the purpose od drawing conclusions is called statistics.
- Today, statistics plays a vital role in society. The different departments of the government have been
using statistics to improve the economic status of the country.
- In education, statistics is used to keep information about school profiles such as enrolment rates, drop-
out rates, number of facilities, manpower count, and budget.
- Statistics is also important in business. It can be used to predict the profitability of a company for the
next given number of years.
- In psychology, the results of personality tests can provide feedback to different experts in line with
understanding human behavior.
- Even students are exposed to statistics when they monitor their achievement in class.
Defining a problem
1. Personal choice- the problem must be a personal choice of the researcher.
2. Interest- choose a problem that is in line with the interests of the researcher.
3. Economic consideration- there are available materials and data needed for the research.
4. Specificity- the objectives of the study should be attainable.
5. Significance- the problem should be significant and in line with current conditions and its potential
usability in the future.
6. Relevance- the research problem should contribute to the existing body of knowledge regarding that
particular field.
Statistical Instruments
- An interview guide is list of questions to be asked face to face to gather data from the respondents.
Types of Questionnaires

1. Structured or closed format- the questions in this format consist of questions that have one answer
only.
2. Unstructured or open format- the questions in this format can have different answers. There are no
limits as to the responses of respondents.
- Rating scales are often used in survey research to ask the respondents to rate or select a response in
ranked manner.
- In conducting a study, the population or sample to be taken should be parallel to the objective of the
study.
- Population refers to a set of people, animals, objects, measurements, and events involved in a
statistical study wherein data are collected.
- The members of the group selected from the population are known as the sample.
- Sampling techniques can be classified as probability sampling and nonprobability sampling.
- In probability sampling, all members of the population are known. The sample is selected
systematically from the population, wherein every member has an equal chance to be chosen as part of
the sample.
Types of Probability Sampling
1. Simple random sampling- every member of the population has an equal chance to be selected.
2. Systematic sampling- members of the population are listed in a systematic way and are selected at
equal intervals from the starting point.
3. Stratified random sampling- the sample is selected randomly from a subgroup of the population
called the strata; the researcher will randomly select the sample.
4. Cluster sampling- the members of the population are divided into groups or clusters based on
geographical area.
- In nonprobability sampling, the entire members of the population are not known. The sample is
selected without order and members do not have an equal chance in being part of the sample.
Types of Nonprobability Sampling
1. Purposive sampling- the sample is selected based on the objective or purpose of the study.
2. Convenience sampling- in this sampling technique, samples are chosen because of their
availability. This is the easiest way of getting respondents.
3. Quota sampling- it is the process of selecting a sample based on a specified number of members
needed in the study.
4. Snowball sampling- this is also known as referral sampling, wherein the researcher asks referrals
from the participants to locate potential members of the sample who are hard to find.
- In methods of data collection, the defined problem can only be answered if there are sufficient data
gathered. Data can be classified as qualitative or quantitative.
- Qualitative data are representations of a class such as words or symbols, whereas quantitative data
are the measure or amount represented by numbers.
Direct method
1. Observation – the researcher sees the situation directly to gather data.
2. Interview – this can be classified as personal interview, telephone interview, or online interview.
Personal interview is done through direct conversation with the interviewee. A telephone
interview is a direct conversation using a telephone or an electronic gadget for communication.
Indirect method
1. Questionnaire – this method uses a questionnaire to gather to gather data. Recall that a
questionnaire is a printed list of questions to be answered by the respondents without the presence
of the researcher.
2. Registration – this method gather data from legal documents imposed by laws such as registered
certificates (birth, marriage, death, business, etc.).

Performance Task
Investors use statistics and probability to assess how likely it is that a certain investment will
pay off.
For example, a given investor might determine that there is a 5% chance that the stock of
company A will increase 100x during the upcoming year. Based on this probability, they’ll decide
how much of their portfolio to invest in the stock.
