Factors Affecting The

Motivation of the Grade 11- St.

John Bosco STEM Students of
Baco Catholic School, Inc. In
Coping with Modular Distance
Learning
CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

•Background of The Study
Learning is stimulated, guided, and sustained by motivation. It is an
important component of self- regulated learning, which is the collection of
attitudes and mental processes that allow a person to direct their own
learning. Motivation is the process by which goal- oriented behavoirs are
initiated, guided, and maintained. It is what motivates you to take action,
whether it is getting a glass of water to quench your thirst or reading a
book to expand your knowledge.
Learning how to motivate your student is one of the most diffcult aspects
of becoming a teacher. It is also one of the most crucial. Students who are
unmotivated will struggle to learn effectively. They will not tetain
information, will not participate , and some may even become disruptive.
According to Dickey , 2004; Owens et.al. 2009; Venter, 2003; Williams
et.al.2006, distance education can be a lonely experience in many ways, also
students are left to motivate themselves and push through barriers and
hurdles with less help and support from peers and teachers.
The purpose of the study is to identify and analyze what are the factors
affecting the motivation of the Grade 11- St. John Bosco STEM Students of
Baco Catholic School, Inc. In coping with modular distance learning.
Statement of the Problem

This research aims to determine the factors affecting the motivation of the Grade
11- students STEM in coping with modular distance learning. The researcher have
chosen the Grade 11 –students to know what really the factors affecting their
motivation in coping with modular distance learning.

1. What are the factos affecting the motivation of students in coping with modular
distance learning?
2. Why do students need motivation?
3. What obstacles or barriers make yourself unmotivated?
4. What would be the consequences of bein not motivated in doing school works?
Research Hypothesis
Motivation is an important factor which encourages students to give
their best performance and help reaching enterprise goals. In conducting
this study the following assumption/s were made and assumed that the
participants in the study is freely answer with honesty the questions
regarding what really the factors affecting their motivation in coping
with modular distance learning. And base on their experience it is better
to know the professional education competencies objectively.
Significance of the Study
The findings of this study may be beneficial to certain groups or
individuals involved in the study. This is significant and beneficial to the
individuals listed below:
• For the students. Who are the participants in this study it will help them to
determine what are the factors affecting the motivation on them and
identifying what is interfering with them.
• To the teachers . It will help the teachers who were the role models for
teaching and guiding the students to understand why other students did not
pass the modules with complete answers.
• To the parents. This study may provide them with information about the
factors that contribute to being unmotivated and how it affects their
academic performance. As a result, they may be more motivated to
motivate their children.
• To upcoming researchers. It will be used as a guide for them to improve
and conduct research with this same study.
Scope And Delimitation of the Study

• This study focuses solely on the factors affecting the motivation of the Grade
11- STEM students in coping with modular distance learning.

• The study will be conducted in 100% population of all the Grade 11 students
in STEM.

• The research design of this study will be small sample only.

Definition of Terms
• Learning- the activity or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying,
practicing, or experiencing something.
• Disruptive- causing trouble and therefore stopping something from
continuing as usual.
• Motivation- the act or process of giving somenone a reason for doing
something, at or process of motivating someone.
• Modular Distance Learning- is a form of distance learninh that uses Self-
Learning Modules(SLM) based on the most essential learning competencies
(MELCS) provided by DepEd.
• Enthusiasm- absorbing or controlling possession of the mind by any interest.
• Perception- is the sensory experience of the world. It involves both
recognizing environmental stimuli and actions in response to these
stimuli.
• Academic Performance- is the measurement of student achievement
across various academic subjects.
• Factors- a circumstance , fact, or influence that contributes to a result or
outcome.
CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter contains significant literatures relevant to the study. It will

be extremely beneficial in further understanding the purpose of this research.
With the perceived “new normal” brought about by the pandemic Novel
Corona Virus, also known as Covid-19 around the world, almost every
aspect of life was affected and changed in an instant. One of the most
noticeable changes is in the field of education.
Despite calls to postpone classes until 2021, the Department of Education (DepEd) insists that
millions of Filipino students education should not be delayed. To ensure that learning is not hampered,
DepEd implemented a distance learning approach-a mode of learning delivery in which interaction
occurs between a teacher and students who are geographically separated from each other during
instruction.
And since the admission of students is not face to face we cannot say that they have all the
motivation to study, especially in the mode of learning which is modular.
According to Cavas (2011), motivation is a fundamental educational variable because it
promotes new learning and performance by utilizing previously learned skills, strategies, and
behavoirs.
For example, it is stated that the school environment optimizes motivation and learning
when it is accesible, secure, positive, personalized, and empowering. Teachers here, of course,
play a very important role because they are an integral part of the school environment.
According to studies, teachers, knowledge and skills, motivation level, qualifications, forms of
evaluation, teaching style, quality of enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can all contribute to learner
motivation. The more enthusiastic, motivated and qualified teachers are in teaching and evaluating,
the greater the capacity to increase learners motivation to learn. ( Williams and Williams, 2011 )
In proportion to Jean- Louis Berger, Sturt A. Karabenick (2011) , there is substantial evidence that
student motivation and use of learning strategies are related. However, there is a lack of
understanding about their reciprocal affects whether motivation influence strategy use, the opposite
or whether the effects are bidirectional- as well as which components of motivation and strategies
are involved.
In addition to, motivation has a number of effects on student learning and behavior. To begin
motivation directs behavior toward specific goals. Establishes specific goals for people to strive for
and, as a result, influences students choices. Motivation also increases the effort and energy required
to determine whether a student will pursue a difficult task with enthusiasm or with a lifeless attitude.
It will be an important factor influencing the initiation and continuation of activities, as well as
increasing the time of the students duties.( Suhag et. al. (2016).
On the other hand, motivation influences how information is processed and
how it processed and thus motivated students are more likely to understand and
examine material rather than simply observing learning movements superficially.
It is an essential component of learning and plays a critical role in assisting
students in becoming involved in academic activities.
Motivation is not only important in and of itself, but it also significant
predictor of learning and achievement. Students who are more motivated to learn
stay in class longer, put more effort, learn more deeply, and perform better on
standardized tests. It‘s common sense, but it‘s also backed up by hundred of
studies.
