Students should divide the tasks according to the 8 stages of engineering design process:

1. Identify the problem

[What is the problem you want to solve]

2. Research Problem
[What do you know about the problem? Find out as much about the problem as you can. What
are the criteria (conditions that the design must satisfy – Its overall size or wieght, etc) and
constrains (limitation with material, time, size of team, etc. of the problem]

3. Develop possible solutions

[Brainstorm as many solutions as possible]

4. Select Best Possible Solution

[Which of your design do you think is the best possible solution]

5. Construct Prototype
[Using the material given, build a prototype (a working model) of your design. Dont forget
about the criteria (conditions that the design must satisfy) and constraints (limitation that need
to be designed around]

6. Test and Evaluate Solution

[Test and evaluate your design. Did you satisfy the criteria and constraints?]

7. Communicate

8. Redesign for future work / Recommendation

[Did your design solve the problem? If not, brainstorm a new design, build and test it until you
have successfully solved the problem]

1. PROBLEM STATEMENT

Jerry Brown,a California gorvernor once stated that the world has a plastic pollution
problem and it’s snowballing-but so is public awareness and action.

2. RESEARCH STATEMENT

In 1950,the world’s population of 2.5 billion produced 1.5 millions tons of plastic .In
2016,a global population of more than 7 billion people produced over 320 million tons
of plastic. It is set to double by 2034.Everyday approximately 8 million pieces of
plastic pollution find their way into the oceans.Malaysia is the eight-worst country
worldwide for plastic waste. It is estimated that Malaysia produced almost 1 million
tons of plastic waste in 2010,of which 0.14 to 0.37 million tons that have been
washed into the ocean.

3. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEM

There are several solutions available in order to solve this problem. The first one is by
reducing the usage of straw of change the material of the straw from plastic to a
reusable material so that the straw can be reuse many times without any
problem.Next solution is to reduce the usage of polymer bag by making a pot that is
made up from waste products.By making this pot,the usage of plastics by farmer or
gardener can be reduced.Lastly,we can change the materials used for plastic bags
with materials such as cotton since nylon or polyster also be made from plastics.Plus
by using cotton material bag,it can be used many times hence it also will be
environmental friendly.

4. THE BEST POSSIBLE SOLUTION

According to our observation, the most suitable and more convenience solution to

solve the problem is by making a pot that is made up from waste products in order to
replace the polymer bag.We found out that the best waste products to be use to
replace the polymer material is waste papers since it is a degradable materials and
not harmful to the environment.Instead of just using waste papers,we decide to use
grinded eggshells to act as a cement to strengthen the structure of the pot since
waste papers cannot stand on its own.Plus, this eggshells can also provide calcium to
the soil which is very good for the growth of the plant. We also will used corn starch

that is mixed with water to act as a glue to hold the eggshells and papers together. So
based on the ingredients provided,it is the best solution since it does not involve that
can be harmful to the plant or to the surroundings.Apart from that, all of the
substances are easily obtained.

6. ADVANTAGES/BENEFITS OF THE PROTOTYPE

There are many benefits that is provided by the products.firstly, since the pot is just
made from waste papers, eggshells and corn starch, the price of the pot is very
cheap.Since it does not require much capital in making the pot,so the selling price is
very cheap and also reasonable. So this make the pot is affordable by the
people.Secondly, the post is basically made without any chemical involved so it is a
very eco-friendly product since it will not harm the environment or the plant.Plus the
waste paper used can be degraded,so it will not cause any pollution.Lastly is the pot
can help the farmer or gardener to save more time and also energy since by using
this pot,the farmer or gardener do not need to take off the plant from the pot before
planting it into the soil like how they do with the polymer bag.Since the pot can be
planted straight away into the soil, there is no need to waste time on cutting the pot or
struggling to take the plant off from the pot.So by having this pot,the farmers and also
gardeners can increase the quantity and quality of the plant produced.

7. LIMITATIONS OF THE PROTOTYPE

The only limitation of the product is the pot cannot last too long since it is made from
waste papers which will easily to get soak when in contact with water. In addition, the
corn starch also can be dissolve when in contact with a lot of water. So the pot is not
suitable for the outdoor planting before it is planted into the soil.

8. RECOMMENDATIONS / FUTURE WORKS

As for the future works,we wish to produce a pot that have more quality and also
produce variety of sizes for the pot so that it can be used for any kind or size of plant
that farmers or gardener wanted to plant. We also wanted to produce pot that made
up from materials that can last longer but at the same time can be an eco-friendly
products.
