PRINTED BOOKS VS EBOOKS (electronic books): PREFERENCES OF THE

MILLENIAL STUDENTS

CHAPTER I

Background of the study

Growing up in the age of technology has its advantage and disadvantage, the world is becoming
more productive due to these advances; however the addition of technology can at times
overshadow the process of the past, technological advances have seemingly opened up an
entirely different world on how information received. Recent technological related to e-readers
and tablets devices such as iPad and Kindle have change the trade of publishing industry.
Publishers are now using those devices in hopes of reaching the audiences they had ones
captivated with print formats. Titles are still available in digital formats. E-books have become a
global phenomenon with reading devices available in numerous countries around the world this
sudden boom of productions and sales has caused some confusion because of disparity
between the cost of E-books and printed books. After the initial cost of reading device,
consumers can usually buy E-books for lower price than printed books. On other hand printed
books has more good effects on one’s health, printed books can help you sleep better and it
prevent eye strain. Printed books is also good and suitable for children it helps kids become a
better reader. Since that, E-books have become a mainstay and a powerful trend in the
publishing industry, however the demise of printed books as a result of E-books has not
materialized, but instead, the two formats have existed simultaneously which means they still
both exist popularly.

Statement of the problem

Generally this study aimed to gather information on different preferences of millennial


students on printed books against E-books

1. Can we get the same information on E-books and printed books?

2. Is millennial students still using printed books?

3. What is mostly used nowadays printed books or E-books?


Hypothesis

Null hypothesis: There is no significant difference between the number books sold and the
number millennial using books

Significance of the study

This study was conducted to give information regarding on our study about printed books vs E-
books. The result of this study hoped to benefit the following.

Millennial this study will provide theme information and ideas about the advantage and
disadvantage of both printed books and electronic books.

Scope and limitation

This study will focus on the effect of technological advances that affects on what is mostly used
nowadays is it printed books or E-books we will also identify their advantages and
disadvantages. This study was not limited, kids, teenagers and adults could benefit to this
study.

Definition of terms

For further and clearer understanding of the terms used in this study, the following terms
where defined conceptually

Captivated- to attract and hold the attention or interest of, as a beauty or excellence

Digital formats- in electronic form

Disparity-a great difference


E-reader- is a device for reading content such as E-book

Mainstay- A person or a thing on which something else is based or depends

Print format- Are the layouts that are generated when you want to print

Publisher- A person or a company that prepares and issues books, journals, music or other work
for sale.
