TWIN SPARK THEORY
TWIN SPARK THEORY

 The Twin Spark name

comes from the fact that
there are two spark plugs
per cylinder. The second
small spark helps to reduce
harmful emissions and
protects the three-way
catalytic converter by
ensuring that less unburnt
fuel should reach it.
History of Twin Spark
 The Twin Spark technology was first introduced
in 1985, when the old twin-cam engine from the
Alfa 75 was redesigned to incorporate two spark
plugs per cylinder (as Alfa had done in the past
in various race engines). All Twin Spark engines
are 4 'in line' and have been developed with 8 or
16 valves. All cars featuring the Twin Spark
engines since the Alfa Romeo 155 use the 16
valves ones. Porsche and Mercedes have also
developed engines with two spark plugs per
cylinder, but Alfa Romeo is the only one to put
two spark plugs and 4 valves per cylinder.
WIRING DIAGRAM OF TWIN SPARK SYSTEM
 TWIN Spark engines uses special 4
ground electrode spark plugs. These
spark plugs ensures better
combustion and lower exhaust
emissions.
TWIN SPARK ENGINES
Advantage:
 Improves combustion efficiency,
 More power
 Cleaner emission
Disadvantages:

 Benefits not convincing enough for most

car makers.
 Increased engine manufacturıng cost with
extra ignition system.
Who use it ?

Alfa 1.6 to 2.0-litre engines,

 Mercedes V6 and V8
