The two passages characterize Bean by using different perspectives.
In the first passage, Bean
looks down at his shoes. In the second passage, the author describes Beans thoughts at that moment. This allows the readers to understand Bean. Because the author shows us his thoughts and actions, the readers can infer that Bean is stubborn. Also, the first passage talks about how Ender notices a piece of paper in Bean’s hand. In the second passage, the author describes how Bean slightly turned his hand to show Ender the paper. The author’s techniques used to describe Bean allow the readers to see the full picture of Bean’s character. Orson Scott Card’s writing greatly changes the whole book.
