John Gurung

I’m a fine art, documentary photographer. In my work, I explore the notions of isolation, identity
& sense of belonging. I’m fuelled by my own curiosity to people and the world. My images are
mani- festations of my own view of the world. As I grew up in both Nepal and UK, I’m
fuelled by my own experience of seeing which is in this peculiar mix of both eastern and
western culture.

Photography is ultimately personal, I have this diaristic approach towards photography to the
point where it becomes biographical of my life.
Aesthetic

Modern meets classic. For my ‘aesthetic’ of my design, I’d like to go for a modern
comtemporary feel with a quiry element to it. For the overall colour theme of my design, I
usually go for soft pastel colours such as the examples above. For a more website, ‘business’
appropriate, I usually go for muted soft colours such as the examples below.
Minimalistic

For my design, I don’t like clutter. I’d rather experiment with colours and the typography, I enjoy
experimenting with this cohesion and combination.

A little playfulness mixed wth careful intentions.

-What does your portfolio consist
of?

My portfolio consists of themes ranging from identity, separation and intimacy. The various
projects and photographs in my portfolio embody the mentioned themes. In most of my
projects, I’m nearly always an outsider trying to look in or understand different ideals,
photography simply becomes a
social tool for me to engage in that
exploration.
-Your approach to your practice what makes you and your work different?

Everyone is different and unique, me being me is enough but to survive in the creative industry,
it’s hard and challenging. I guess what makes my approach to my work different is that it’s
diaristic and it comes straight from my own personal experiences. I tend to specific tool such as
film cameras, various print types, retouching methods that’s known to be of my style. In which, I
have managed
to accumulate over the last years. In my practice, I also tend to use writing to reflect my ideas and
experiences to the photographs, both of which are distinctive of me.
-What do you want to tell your audience?

For me, more than telling, sharing is key for me. In my projects, I aim to evoke a sense of
understand- ing and vulnerability, in which I hope my audience can understand and
experience. Photography helps us to share our experiences through life, through hardships,
through failures, through success. It helps us to feel close to our life, we feel connected to it. We
understand a historical document intel- lectually, but we understand a human document
emotionally.
-What are you interested in?

Overall, I am interested in the way we look at things, and particularly the way in which our
percep- tions shape the way we view our everyday surroundings. Photography for me is this
journey of find- ing sense of the world through my personal experiences and feelings. I like to
think and see myself as a stranger, an outsider to all of my projects. Almost like an alien,
everything is new to the eye, you’re in this meditative state of mind where you are open to see
more and new things. As things become more familiar, it becomes increasingly difficult to look at
things with a critical eye. In most of my projects, I’m nearly always an outsider trying to look in
or understand different ideals, photography simply becomes a social tool for me to engage in
that exploration. Photography is my response to
my life.
