Collective Area Calculations:

Length: 100 meters

Width: 99 meters
H=17.4 meters
So, the collective area will be 39236 meters square.

Environmental Coefficient (C1):

Because the building will be surrounded by other structures with
the same height or higher so this coefficient will be 0.25.

Average Flash Density (Ng) & Expected Strike Frequency (Nd):

As the location of the building is in Egypt, so the expected number
of times of a lightning strike will occur is Td=10 flashes/year.
So the probability of lightning strike to occur is Ng=0.7113
event/year. Then we will get Nd=0.007 event/year.

Structural Coefficient (C2):

The structure of the building and the roof materials will be
common so C2=1 according to the table

Structure Contents Coefficient (C3):

The structure of the building is non flammable due to the building
material so the coefficient will be C3=0.5

Structure Occupancy Coefficient (C4):

The building will be probably occupied according to its application
but it will not be a difficult evacuation building.

Lightning Consequence Coefficient (C5):

For an important building like a university, we need to ensure
service continuity during lightning strikes. So, C5=5.
Then we will calculate the tolerable lightning strike frequency
(Nc) using the above constants according to the relation

So, Nc=0.0022 event/year. As Nd < Nc so the protection is

required in this case.

Efficiency “E” = 1-(Nc/Nd) = 0.6857 which is less than 0.8 so the

protection level is Class IV with maximum area of mesh grid
equal to 20*20 meters.

Due to building height being lower than 23m, so the number of

down conductors will be the perimeter over 30 so it will be 9.
