MECH 412 Heat Transfer – April 15, 2021

Problem (4) (25 points)

A thin copper metallic sheet having a surface area of 1 m2 receives a heat flux of 1000
W/m2 from one side. The other side is subjected to convective air flow having a
temperature of 25℃ and convective heat transfer coefficient 10 W/m2 K (See Figure
below).

a) It is required to limit the temperature of the surface to an upper limit of 75℃. It is

recommended to use triangular fins to achieve this upper surface temperature
constraint. What would be the minimum required amount of triangular fin copper
material used in your design? If the length of the fin (extruded dimension) should
not exceed L=10 cm.

b) Would choosing rectangular fins be of a better choice?
