FOLKTALE
Long ago, a young man named Brahmadatta
lived in a village. He grew fresh vegetables in
his field and took them to the city once a week
to sell them. Brahmadatta was packing up his
vegetables to leave for the city, one afternoon.
His mother was anxious about her son going
alone, as he usually had a companion going
with him to help. She asked around but no one
was free to go along with him. She called him
and said, “My dear son, I would advise you not
to travel alone. You must take a companion
with you so that he can help you if required.
What if something happens to you?”
Brahmadatta replied, “Mother, I am a grown
man. I can take good care of myself. Besides, I
do not have any companion to take with me.”
“Not to worry! I will arrange a good companion
for you, just give me a little time!” said
Brahmadatta’s mother. She looked around and
then fetched a crab from the nearby pond and
put it into Brahmadatta’s travelling bag. As
Brahmadatta did not want to hurt his mother’s

sentiments, he kept the crab in a camphor box
and set out on his journey.
The journey was long and Brahmadatta got
very tired by evening. He looked around and
saw a large banyan tree in the middle of a field.
He decided to take some rest under the tree
and soon he went to sleep.
He had not realized that in the hollow of that
banyan tree, there lived a snake. Seeing
Brahmadatta fast asleep, the snake came down
and hid himself in Brahmadatta’s travelling bag.
He was searching for something to eat. The
smell of camphor seemed very nice to the
snake and thus, he slithered his way into the
camphor box. As soon as he entered the
camphor box, the crab sitting inside caught
hold of the snake’s neck and killed it.
When Brahmadatta woke up, he was
astonished to find a dead snake lying beside
him. In his heart, he thanked his mother for
giving him the sage advice of taking a
companion with him.

Carved into
sandstone in the midst of desert
canyons and mountains, the city
of Petra was a capital city and
thriving trading center of the
Nabataean empire in 400 B.C. It
eventually fell to ruins and sat
undiscovered till the 1800s,
when it was rediscovered by a
Swiss explorer.
Petra is the most important
tourist junction of Jordan. The
entrance to the city is through
a ‘Siq’, a narrow 1km long gorge, flanked on both sides by high cliffs. At the end of the Siq lies the
famed treasury, a small hall that was once used as a royal tomb.
The treasury is just one of the many archaeological wonders that Petra has to offer. Throughout the
city, you will find many intricately carved and well designed tombs and structures. There’s even a
theatre that could easily seat 3000 people! Natural calamities like earthquakes destroyed the
houses that once stood here, but the tombs are still intact.
In addition to the many tombs are also two museums to explore and learn about the history of
Petra. The Nabataeans were an industrious people and the ruins of their transport, irrigation and
storage systems are proof of that.
According to archaeologists, to this date, only 15% of the city has been uncovered. The vast city is
still majorly underground.

Why is too much sugar bad for your body?
Everyone knows that too much sugar can cause
cavities and painful trips to the dentist. But did
you know sugar has many other effects on your
body which are also very bad?
1. Weak Immune System :
Sugar weakens the immune system which causes
‘Hypoglycemia’. This is also known as low blood
sugar - when blood sugar decreases to below
normal levels. This can result in problems includ-
ing weakness and loss of energy. High sugar in
the blood weakens the immune system by
creating an imbalance in the digestive tract
between the good and bad micro-organisms.
2. Acidity :
Having too much sugar can also give you acidity,
which in turn can cause stomach aches,
restlessness, nausea, arthritis and joint pains and
headaches.
3. Diabetes :
When there is excessive sugar in the body over a
long period of time, you can also develop a very
serious disease known as diabetes.

What makes the sky change colours?

Light that looks white to our eyes is actually made up of many
different colours. Each ray of light or light wave is of a different
wavelength or size. The shorter waves seem to be blue while the

longer waves seem red in colour to our eyes.
When light comes from the sun, the light waves of different
lengths travel through the atmosphere. These light waves come
into contact with particles in the earth’s atmosphere- like dust,
ice crystals, water droplets. The light waves then bounce off
these particles and get scattered in the atmosphere.
Particles that are small in size as compared to the light waves
scatter blue light. Red light waves are scattered by gas mole-
cules of nitrogen and oxygen in our atmosphere. Thus we see
the blue sky most of the time. But when the light waves have
to travel a great distance, the blue light is removed. So during
sunrise and sunset, when the sunlight travels a really long
path to reach us, the blue light is removed leaving mostly
orange, yellow and red lights. This light is reflected by clouds
and other objects and makes the sky a beautiful, colourful
reddish, orange one!
Thus the light colour depends on the size of the particles
compared to the wavelength of the light.

How much does the sky weigh?

The sky does have weight. It is made of air and air is made of
all kinds of gas molecules. Those gas molecules have weight!
If sky has weight, then how is earth carrying that weight?
Weight of the air is evenly distributed over the earth’s
surface. Since air moves around easily, it presses on us from
all the directions. If it was to be only on top of our heads, it
would knock us down to the ground.
The average weight of air that presses down on us (called air
pressure) is 14.7 lbs (6.6 Kg) per square inch of earth’s surface.
Which is roughly more than 11 billion billion pounds (5.2
million billion metric tonnes)
This means the sky weighs 14.7 lbs per square inch of earth
surface which is roughly 11 billion billion pounds.
So, you can say that sky weighs one millionth of the mass of
the Earth.

Dutchman
“I want to listen to a ghost story tonight!” demanded Rohan from Sir
Dig-a-Lot. “I don’t know any ghost stories Rohan. I am a man of the past”
replied Sir Dig-s-Lot. “Well then tell me a ghost story from the past”
reasoned Rohan. Sir Dig-a-Lot thought for a while and said “Very well!”.
He adjusted his glasses and continued “I will tell you the story of a
ghost ship that sails the seas till date, the flying Dutchman.”

“The Flying Dutchman is a famous ghost ship that can reach

the shore and is fated to sail the oceans forever. The myth,
if you may call it, dates back to the 17th-century. Sightings
from people have been noted in the late 18th century. Mny
people in the 19th and 20th century claimed that the
ship was glowing with a bright light. If another ship
tries to contact the Flying Dutchman, the crew of the
Flying Dutchman, it will receive messages from
people long dead. In the experience of sailors, the
sight of this ship is considered very unlucky”
 Sir Dig-a-Lot said “The reference of the ship was mostly in literature and in stories. The first
reference of this ship can be seen in the book ‘A Voyage to Botany Bay’, written by George
Barrington. Writers like Thomas Moore, John Leyden, Sir Walter Scott also wrote about the
ship in their poems. It gradually became a famous story when people
kept sharing it and re-telling it. Now it has been adapted in even cartoons
and a movie. Do you know there is an episode of Spiderman with the
Flying Dutchman? Ask your dad he will show it to you”

“Really?! I will” Rohan said excitedly “So this ship can be in all the
seas across the world?”
Sir Dig-a-Lot replied “No Rohan. One can see this ship can be seen
somewhere close to the Cape of Good Hope, on the Atlantic
Coast. Myth has it that the Dutchman collected the souls of all
the people who died at sea and took them to the afterlife. “

Rohan asked “Do you believe this story?”

Sir Dig-a-Lot said, “It all comes down to believing doesn’t it? If you believe it’s true otherwise there are scien-
tific explanations for this as well. While folk stories would tell you the Flying Dutchman was given to Davy Jones
by his love, the sea goddess Calypso, who gave Jones the duty of ferrying the souls who died at sea in the next
world. The scientists would tell you it’s nothing but an optical illusion. It is really up to you”
Rohan said immediately “I think I believe!”
Sir Dig-a-Lot tucked Rohan in bed and laughed “Do that! But don’t let it
scare you or stop you. Now sleep tight!”
The little red crab quickly scuttled
across the beach, keeping an eye out
for the seagulls that would swoop
low and try and pick them up. He
wanted to make it to the water and
join his friends who were waiting
for him. Suddenly he crashed into
something in the sand, it was a
little a boy building a sand castle!
He grew curious and slowly
moved closer to him...

The Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the loving memory of his
beautiful wife Mumtaj Mahal.
