The Hope Diamond landed in the hands of French traveller Jean-Baptiste
Tavernier. Tavernier died from a mysterious fever and legend says that
his body was shredded by wolves. King Louis XIV bought the diamond;

The diamond was stolen but reappeared in London and was acquired
by banker Thomas Hope. The diamond cursed all those who touched
it and people kept selling it. It was then bought by an American heir-
ess Evalyn Walsh McLean. Would you believe that she too experi-
enced terrible tragedies like the death of her 9 year old son in a car
crash, suicide of her 25 year old daughter and her husband becom-
ing insane?
The Hope Diamond was finally bought by jeweler Harry Winston;
who simply put the diamond in an envelope and posted it to the
Natural History Museum in Washington D.C. He felt it was the
most secure and unnoticeable way of sending such an expen-
sive item.

Discover A New Place
I’m not on the set of some fairytale movie!
The oddly shaped trees you see behind me
are totally real! And there are 400 of these
mysterious pine trees, here in a suburb
called ‘Gryfino’ in the ‘Zachodniopomorskie’
(try saying that!) province of Poland. All of
them have the same northward 90-degree
bend at the base of their limbs, and have
grown to be tall and seemingly unhampered
by their C shape curves.
Some experts believe that the trees grew like
this because they incurred some sort of
damage to the tip and along some side
branches. Well I think there’s something
more than nature at play here because they’re all uniformly deformed! There are a lot of theories about this, like
snow storms, or even intentional damage to make furniture. Even the locals here haven’t a clue as to the origin
of these mysterious crooked trees.
That’s probably because the local town was devastated during World War I and wasn’t rebuilt until the 1970s,
by new settlers I suppose. I, however, think that a witch or wizard had something to do with these trees. I mean,
how else do you explain 22 rows of crooked trees surrounded by completely normal trees?

In the Earth’s outer core, there is liquid iron. Its motion generates
a magnetic field. Every few hundred thousand years, the poles
interchange. How? Why? We don’t know.

Intelligence in 1977, got a 72 second signal from the constella-
tion Sagittarius. No one knows who sent the signal.

in 1998. This screw was probably 320 million years old; which is
older than dinosaurs.

Arkansas in the US witnessed tons of dead black birds falling

from the sky, in 2012. No one knows why this happened.

History of
the Computer
One night Sir Dig-a-Lot came late and asked Rohan, “What do you
want to learn today Rohan?”
“Tell me about the computer. When was it invented, its history,”
Rohan eagerly asked.
Sir Dig-a-Lot took a deep breath and an-
swered, “The first computer was a simple
calculator made of a bunch of strings and
beads. It was called the Abacus. It was used
for simple calculations and was invented in
500 B.C.

Pascal

ator

Blaise Pascal then invented a simple calculator

in the year 1642 which didn’t run on electricity,
but gears and wheels. This was modified over
the years and finally, in the year 1833, Charles
Babbage invented the first modern computer.”
“But the computer that Babbage invented was only for
general purposes and employed punch cards for input and a
steam engine for power. It couldn’t be developed because of
funding problems and lack of help to develop the parts. For
his contribution he is still known as the ‘Father of
the Computer’.

It was not until the twentieth century that electricity was used to
run a computer. In the 1880s Herman Hollerith introduced punch
cards and sorting machines for the United States Census Bureau to
handle large amounts of data from the census. Hollerith’s company
eventually became the core of what we know as IBM.”

Rohan interrupted the lesson. “Is my

father’s computer made by Babbage?
He calls it ancient!”

9
Sir Dig-a-Lot laughed and said, “No Rohan, your father’s computer
belongs to an advanced era of computers - the third genera-
tion. The first generation of computers used vacuum tubes
in 1940. They used punched cards or punched paper for
the purpose of inputting information only. It was one
of the most important inventions.

The invention of the transistor marked the beginning

of the second generation of computers in the year
1947. In the 1950s the computer ran on a chip. It
was only in the year 1960 that computers were
affordable and could be kept easily at home.

It was Jack St. Claire Kilby’s and Robert

Noyce’s invention – the integrated circuit or
microchip, that saw the use of computers in
large numbers and also the beginning of the
third generation of computers.
Rohan said, “No wonder my father complains
about his computer. Technology is advancing
every second.”

Sir Dig-a-Lot replied, “That’s

right, Rohan. And someday you
will contribute to it too. Now
off to bed!”

Facts about the Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is one of the only two places on Earth where the compass points true
north instead of the magentic north.

Scientists have discovered large concentrations of methane gas on the ocean floor of the
Bermuda Triangle - which could contribute to the large number of accidents and disappearances.

Some of the deepest spots on Earth are found in the Bermuda Triangle.

The area is known for extremely violent storms which suddenly appear and dissitate.
