The eagle was very cunning and always got fun
out of bothering the other small birds that flew
in the sky. He teased and frightened the tiny
birds. He would intentionally swoop down and
pretend to catch the birds; the birds would
quiver with fear and scatter away. Even at times
when he was not hungry, he would play pranks
to scare off the innocent creatures.
The eagle would burst into laughter every time
a bird got scared with his prank. “You stupid
creatures are so scared. Look at me… the whole
sky is mine. I own the sky!” exclaimed the eagle
proudly.
The other birds simply hated the eagle. Unlike
the other eagles, he would swoop down on the
birds, even when he was not hungry. He was
very mean and cruel.
Once, the eagle noticed a flock of beautiful
white pigeons flying gracefully in the sky. The

eagle was very tempted to scare them. He
suddenly came down swooping on them. The
unaware pigeons were scared out of their wits
and scattered away, fluttering their wings.
Suddenly, his ears caught the whizzing sound
of something. He turned and looked and saw a
very sharp arrow, moving speedily towards
him. The arrow was actually meant for the
pigeons, but by then all the pigeons had
dispersed, scared by the eagle.
The sharp arrow struck the eagle on his wing.
Bleeding profusely, he fell on the ground with a
loud thud. He tried to flap his wings but it hurt
too much. It took a long time for his wing to
heal and in that time, he could not hunt or
bother the other birds.
"I shouldn't have bothered and bullied those
birds!" the eagle lamented loudly as he learnt
his lesson.

Who
invented the
telephone?
The telephone was not invented by
just one person. In fact, it was the
culmination of the hard work of
many inventors which eventually led
to the invention of the first function-
al telephone.
Charles Grafton Page (in 1840),
passed a curent between through an
electric wire attached on either ends
to a horseshoe magnet. He came to
the conclusion that connecting and
disconnecting the current caused a
ringing sound in the magnets.
The earliest idea of the telephone
came from Innocenzo Manzetti in
1844. He may have even build some
form of an automaton in 1849.
In 1854, inventor Antonio Meucci
created an early version of a voice

communicating device. However, a
combination of difficulties led to him
not being able to achieve
commercial success in America.
Alexander Graham Bell is perhaps
the one figure everyone associates
with the invention of the telephone.
He studied the human voice and
worked with various schools for the
deaf. He experimented with sound
and created many devices such as
the 'harmonic telegraph' and the
'phonautograph'. In February of
1876, Bell was granted the patent
which covered the transmission of
sound telegraphically. By 1886, there
were more than 15,000 functional
telephones in the United States.

There Are Ghost Words

That Mean Nothing!
I'm sure you have all opened dictionaries at some I wonder if
point or another, looking for words. But have you ever ghost words are
opened a dictionary to search for ghost words? Well, if see-through
it's a ghost, how sure are you that you will be able to
too!
find it? How will you know if it is a ghost word? Will it
look scary?
Actually it is difficult to find a ghost word in a dictio-
nary. But a ghost word is a word which doesn’t have
any meaning and has been printed in the dictionary.
These words are not used anywhere.
Then why put them in a dictionary in the first place?
Why print them if these words are not used
anywhere? Well, believe it or not sometimes there are
some words that have been printed in the dictionary
due to a printing mistake or an error like typographi-
cal or linguistic confusion. There is one such fake
word- dord, which made its way to Webster’s dictio-
nary and remained there for five long years before
being discovered.
Now these ghosts don't look so scary do they?

Bar Recipe

Granola is a mixture of rolled oats, puffed rice, dried fruit, chocolate chips, honey and
nuts.
Ingredients :
2 1/2 cups old fashioned rolled oats
1/2 cup nuts, roughly chopped
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
Method :
Preheat your oven to 180º C and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper or foil.
Spread the nuts and oats on to the tray and toast them for 8 – 10 minutes or until
they are lightly brown.
While the oats and nuts are toasting, melt the butter, honey, brown sugar, vanilla
and salt in a saucepan. Heat it through until the sugar has dissolved.
Cool the mixture for 5 minutes and then stir together with the toasted oats and nuts.
Make sure to combine well as no oats should remain uncoated.
Line a baking tin with foil, with enough hanging over the edge to be able to hold.
Press the oat mixture on to the bottom, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
Chill for at least two hours before using the overhanging foil to remove the chilled
granola from the tray. Cut into the desired shape before storing.

It was inter-school sports day. Eeshan and Nitin had come to

cheer for athletes and their friend Martin.

“What are you playing with? You should be cheering!” said Eeshan.
Nitin replied, “It’s a magnet. My father gave it to me. I was wondering how
this attracts or repels the objects towards it?”

Eeshan said, “All magnets exert an
invisible force which attracts or
repels things. This magnetic force
is limited to a region around the
magnet. This particular region is
called a magnetic field. It is this magnetic field that
exerts a force that attracts or repels objects.
The field affects other objects along things called
magnetic field lines. A magnetic object can repel or
attract another magnetic object.”

As they were walking they saw a group of students of another school gather
around a drain hole. They were peering inside it as if something had fallen. Einstein
Iyengar wanted to investigate so they all went to check it out. Nitin asked,
“What’s the matter?”

One of the boys said, “Zubin’s house key fell in the drain and we can’t take it
out. It’s a Sunday so there is no janitor or plumber around to help. We tried
to take it out by putting our hand in but none of our hands are thin enough
to reach inside the drain.”
Eeshan looked at Nitin and said, “Give me your magnet.”

He asked Zubin to give his necktie and tied the magnet to one end of it. The
hole in the middle of the magnet helped him to secure the knot. Eeshan asked
the other children to move back and make some room.

Zubin was relieved and the children cheered. “Thank you so much for helping
me. I would have been in a lot of trouble. My parents are out of town and I
would have been locked out,” said Zubin. “No problem,” said Eeshan.

All the children then went to the ice cream parlor
and celebrated the recovery of Zubin’s key.
“So that’s one thing a magnet attracts? Thanks
for showing that to me today,” said Nitin.
Eeshan laughed and said, “Einstein Iyengar will
help one and all!”

The wind vane consists of two parts, a pointer and a fixed cardinal
directional marker, pointing toward the north, south, east and
west. The pointer is shaped in such a way that the mass of each
end is even but each end has different volumes.
When the wind catches the thick end of the pointer, it swings it
around and the arrow points towards the direction in which the
wind is blowing. If the arrow points towards the ‘North’ marker on
the weather vane, it indicates that the wind is blowing from the
north direction to the south direction. A weather vane will not
work if the weights are not equal or the volume of each side is the
same.
The arrow design is the most popular design for the weather
vanes because of its accuracy, simplicity and affordable cost.
