positive parenting helps children know the expectations for their behaviors and rewards them
when they do well. An example would be a parent letting their child have more time doing
something they enjoy as a reward.

2. Compare and contrast discipline and punishment and include an example of each.

Punishment is a penalty when someone breaks a rule. An example would be a child not doing
their homework and then getting grounded. Discipline teaches children from their mistakes. The
consequences in discipline relate to the rule that was broken.

3. Define guidance in your own words. Create an example of a parent providing guidance to a
child.

Guidance is a parent using their foresight and experience to help a child to not make mistakes or
to help them through an obstacle. An example would be a parent telling a child to be more
careful when playing.

4. How does a parent use active listening when communicating with a child?

A parent will have a conversation with a child about how they feel and why they feel that way.

5. Why are consequences an important part of positive parenting?

Children will misbehave and break rules, and making them have consequences will teach them
about following the rules and why it benefits them, it helps the child grow as a person.

with babies and young children?

So that they feel secure and learn how to better communicate with their parents.

7. Why is it important for consequences to match the behavior?

When a consequence matches the behavior it teaches the child and prevents that future
behavior form occurring.

8. Describe a time when you were disciplined rather than punished. How did it help you?

I would stay up late on my phone so I had my phone taken away. It helped me by being able to
sleep better and control my phone usage.

9. Imagine you are a parent and your school age daughter was caught shoplifting a bracelet from a
store. Using what you learned in the module, what are some ways you might approach the
situation?

I would communicate with her and let her know how her behavior was inappropriate and ask
why she did it. I would then discipline her by making her return the bracelet and apologize.
10. Where can families find support and resources in their cities and communities? What benefits
do they provide to families?

Schools, churches and hospitals are all areas where resources can be found for families. Some
hospitals give classes on caring for newborn infants.
