3. The average marks obtained in an examination by two groups of students was

found to be 75 and 85.determine the ratio of students in the two groups, if the

average marks for all students was 80.

Let, total no. of student in 1st group = x

Let, total no. of student in 2nd group = y

Total marks of 1st group = 75x

Total marks of 2nd group = 85y

Total marks of both groups = 80(x+y)

Therefore,

75x+85y=80(x+y)

75x + 85y = 80x +80y

80x – 75x = 85y – 80y

No. of votes

A B C D

5x = 5y

x/y = 5/5

x: y = 1: 1

The ratio of students in the two groups is 1: 1.
