About the Author

Narasinga Rao Prabhakar is a Structural Consultant


practising from Vasai (E), Thane District, Maharashtra,
offering design consultancy services in the field of high-rise
industrial and power plant structures, since June 1993.
A civil engineering graduate from the University of
Mysore, he is a Member of the Institution of Structural
Engineers (UK), and a Member of the Institution of
Engineers (India). He is also a Member of the Institute for
Steel Development Growth , and a Life Member of the
Indian Concrete Institute, the Indian Society for Wind
Engineering and Mumbai Chapter of Indian Geo-technical
Society.

He has over 45 years' professional experience in the design of wide range of structures in
reinforced concrete (RC) and structural steel, of which 13 years were in UK. He was
employed in India with M/s C.R. Narayana Rao, Dept. of Atomic Energy, ECC (L&T), and
Gammon India Limited, and in UK with Tileman & Co., Sir Frederick Snow and Partners,
John Whittaker and Associates and Seltrust Engineering Limited.

Notable among the structures he was involved in design are, over 50 nos. chimneys in the
height ranging from 30m to 230m in India and abroad, several hyperbolic natural draught
cooling towers in India, including a 141m high tower at Panipat, several induced draught
cooling towers in India in RC and timber, 4 nos. parabolic shaped horizontal silos for storage
of fertiliser, sulphur and food grains in RC/prestressed concrete 42m span, 21m high and
500m long at Nhava Sheva Port, complete civil and structural works of 45MW capacity DG
based Power Plant at Sanghi Cements, Kutch, 120m high steel-cum-RC TV tower at Kohima,
65m high RC prilling tower at Kanpur, 50m high 2.185 lakh litre capacity water reservoir at
Andheri Sports Complex, 35 million litre capacity water reservoir at Wadkal, cement plant
structures in UK and New Zealand, structures for copper refining complex in USA, aluminium
smelter project in Dubai, coal preparation plant and a concentrate dryer plant of copper mines
in Zambia, multi-storeyed office blocks and a cark park in UK, aluminium curtain-wall glazing
in India.

Mr. Prabhakar has developed several softwares for computer-aided analysis and design. He
has authored over 25 technical papers on high-rise and industrial structures, published in
national and international journals and seminars. He reviews technical papers and books for
the Indian Concrete Journal, besides drawing cartoons regularly for the same journal.
