Fractions is taught through 3 period lesson using the Red
fraction circles in green frames however there are other
ways fractions can be taught without the fraction circles.
For example, Fractions can be though true the use of glass

3. Counting and addition through ‘Number Rods’ in
Montessori – Discuss
Number rods are Ten rods identical with the Red Rods in
length, but divided into red and blue sections. All the rods are
divided in to sections of the same size as the first rod,
alternating red and blue, the first section always being red.
The number of sections represent the numbers of the rod.

Counting with Number Rods


Counting is taught through the use of The 3 period lesson.
1st the child will arrange the rods the way they do with the
red roads,

In period 1
by pointing to rod 1. Say This is one and count.
then point to the blue on rod 2, say this is 2 and count
you can go through the period one with all the rods.

in period 2,
place all the rods in a horizontal line, and ask the child to
show you or tell you where ___ is and once the child shows it
to you they can count on the rod

in period 3
you point on one of the rods and as what is this, the child can
count and tell you the number of the rod.

addition with Number Rods


there are 2 ways to teach addition using number rods.
1. comparison
this is done by placing 2 rods alongside and asking the
child to compart it with other rods.
for example,
you can place 1 rod and the 2 rod end to end, and then
ask the child to find on rod that is as long as the 2 put
together.
2. using the symbols
this is done by placing the addition and equal symbols
between the rods
for example
you place rod 1 then the + sign then the rod 2 then the =
the child can then count all the rods, and place the rod 3
after the equal sign.
4. How ‘PINK TOWER’ activity is used to explain
mathematical concept to the child
The pink tower gives a child a pre-lesson to mathematics as
the child learns sizing dimensions and order. Which are the
basis of mathematics. With the pink tower the child can be
introduced to the numbers as the smallest cube is 1 and the
biggest is 10, with that then the child can count up to ten, by
starting at the smallest cube on the top of the tower and
moving down to 10 to the biggest cube. The pink tower can
also be lined up in a horizontal line and the child can count
the blocks to learn the mathematical concepts.
