Online v. Face-to-Face Classes

I prefer to have face-to-face classes, but like all individuals, it really does depend on the

student. In my case, definitely face-to-face. I work better in an environment where I can actually

see a nd hear t he guy, or gal, at the front of the room. I enjoy that communication in which I can

get personal feedback from the professor, and what gets more personal than hearing it come from

his/her own mouth? With an email, or message, there’s not constant, back-and-forth conversation

between myself and the instructor. I enjoy knowing the finest details in a matter of seconds,

whereas with an email, it’s definitely up for interpretation.

As a college student, as well as a part-time Walmart associate, I am up to my nose in

assignments, work, sleep, and now student observations. It gets hard for me to manage my time,

and to add an online class to the workload becomes too much. To most people, the online classes

being flexible works out for his/her schedule, but I enjoy a rather rigid structure when it comes to

my everyday life. Everything has to have its place, even if that means I have to commute back

and forth five times a week and still manage to go to work at 2:30. I like the business and hectic

environment of schedules, and hate the fact that online classes have so much downtime between

modules or lessons.

Finally, the discussions. I hate online discussions! I love face-to-face discussions for the

thrill of it actually being a discussion. The environment of being in a heated, constant to-and-fro

discussion allows me to get in and make notes of so many points without constant repetition

between classmates. With online classes, I simply get the same subject being said over and over,

but in a slightly different variation. Unfortunately, 99 percent of the time, it’s a variation of word

placement, and not subject matter or point-of-view.

To conclude, it makes no sense with my busy schedule to want to be in face-to-face

classes, rather than the obvious choice of online classes. However, I am not an easy person, and I

am an individual with my own set of rules and needs. I enjoy to be kept busy, I want real

communication, and I want a discussion where the class doesn’t repeat the same thing over and

over like a parrot.
