Course Purpose & Objectives

In Architectural Design, students gain knowledge and skills specific to those needed to enter a career in
architecture and construction or prepare a foundation toward a post secondary degree in architecture,
construction science, drafting, interior design, and landscape architecture. Architectural design includes
the knowledge of the design, design history, techniques, and tools related to the production of
drawings, renderings, and scaled models for commercial or residential architectural purposes.

This course is recommended for students in Grades 10-12.

Recommended prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, and Principles of Architecture

Some topics covered include:

Introduction to Architecture Lettering as a skill Sketching fundamentals

Auto Cad basics Considerations when designing a house
House’s major components Floor plan development Elevation plan creation
Electrical plan procedure 3D Model creation

Course Assignments

I. Homework - may include worksheets, design ideas, sketching, and general preparation from
presentations, quizzes, or tests. Some grading periods may not have assigned homework because
of the nature of instruction.
II. Laboratory, Class Work or Team Work - constitutes the major portion of the student's time in
this class. Examples of course activities will include: individual and group design projects,
readings from the textbook, writing research papers, and discussions using the Socratic method.
III. Test and Quizzes - will be given as needed to ensure that the student has mastered the information.
Some exams may be given in the form of projects.
IV. Semester Exam - will be given at the end of each term.

Text and References
All test material will be taken from daily notes and lectures. Reference textbooks and materials are
available upon request. Students will be required to keep a notebook that will include notes on all
lecture material and lab work. Your notebook will be worth a portion of your daily grade.

Re-testing:
(Refer to student handbook)
Retesting will take place upon student failure and student request except for research papers,
major projects and semester exams.
It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for the retest. No retests are available for
semester exams or for students who received a “0” for cheating.
 The student must schedule the retest within five (5) days after earning of the failing grade,
except under extenuating circumstances determined by the principal.
A student may only raise his/her test score to a maximum of 70 by taking the retest.
A student may not be retested more than one time for any given original major assessment.

Supplies: Students will need:

1. A folder to keep assignments and paper in a neat and orderly condition
2. Pencils will be used in the class. Students may want to bring a mechanical pencil.
3. Notebook paper in a 3-ring binder.
4. Spiral notebook or a journal for writing assignments.

Classroom Expectations
To facilitate maximum learning, these behaviors will be followed:
1. No IPods, MP3 players, electronic devices etc. will be allowed in the classroom.
2. No cell phone as per school district policy.
3. Do not interrupt the instructor, wait your turn. If you have a question, raise your hand.
4. Students should be seated and quiet by the tardy bell
5. Students will begin working on the starter activity as soon as they are seated
6. No food, drink, or gum will be allowed in the classroom.
7. Shoes must be worn at all times. No hats allowed. Proper apparel must be required during lab
activities.
8. Students will wait to be dismissed at the end of class.

Respect the condition of the room

1. No writing on the desks
2. No feet on the desks or other chairs
3. No downloading or changing Anything on ANY computer
4. Do not touch or move things on the instructors desk or demonstration area
5. Clean up and throw away all trash
6. All students must be safety cleared before using any classroom tools.

Grades

BISD grading policy will be implemented at all times. Student’s grades will be calculated based on
daily work averages and test averages. Progress reports will be sent the third week of each six-week
period. Please note: Teacher Access Center, the electronic grade book, can be accessed by parents
through the Internet via an access code and password.
