COMMENT
Keith Arnatt was a conceptual artist, he did a series of the photographs
called Rubbish Tip from 1988-1989. The images feature close-up shots of
rubbish that has been dumped at a tip. In each photograph, the lens
focuses upon select pieces of discarded food – such as bread, chicken
bones and vegetables – that lie on clear and pale-coloured plastic bags.
The bags blend into the image and highlight the various hues of the
rubbish. Arnatt took the photographs in 1988–1989 on multiple trips that
he made to the Coleford Tip near his home in Tintern, Monmouthshire. He
did not use any artificial light when shooting the frames, relying solely on
daylight, and the artist employed an extremely shallow depth of field,
sharply focusing the lens on the closest part of the featured object.
According to the critic Mark Haworth-Booth, Arnatt ‘chose to place this
very narrow plane of focus on each object’s nearest edge. Keith Arnatt
believes this puts the viewer in the position in which he himself was when
he first noticed and picked up these half-buried objects. the discarded,
mouldy food items can be seen as objects of beauty when presented in a
different setting, especially when using framing techniques, colour and
lighting and that enhance the visual appeal of the images.

This image is a large, rectangular, landscape image. I
the image the audience can clearly see the top of a

In the background of the image there are pail plastic
bags which blend into the image and make the bottle
stand out because it has a bright red top. The plastic
bags in the image have a red substance covering Keith Arnatt is going to influence by
them - looks like something food related. The decision making in my project though

think Keith Arnatt used a fast shutter speed because
the image is crisp and the details are clear. This image
has an in between depth of field which means that
there are quite a lot of elements in the image in focus
There is little composition in the image as there are no
learning lines and the rule of thirds can’t be applied. I
like this image because the pastel colours makes the
rubbish stand out more.

C O N TA C T S H E E T S

I took this image pointing my camera down toward the pile of rubbish that I
found. In the image there are two dark green arm chairs that have rubbished
piled on top of them The different type of rubbish includes a typewriter,
cardboards, a small table which is upside down and a lamp. when taking this

image didn't move any of the objects. The viewpoint of this image allows the
audience to get an understanding of the amount of rubbish there is. This is
because the pile of rubbish fills the frame of the image. In the background of the
image the audience can see the concrete ground and a puddle in the top left of
the image. This image is landscape, large and rectangular. The image is in colour
to make the image more interesting to look at as there are some vibrant colours
within the rubbish for example the dark green arm chairs. I enhanced the colours
on photoshop through increasing the vibrance and the saturation on photoshop.
To take this image I used a fast shutter speed because I wanted the image to be
crisp so the audience can see the details within the rubbish very clearly. This
image has an in-between depth of field because there are quite a feW element
within the image that are in focus however not enough to make it have a deep
depth of field. I don't think the image Would be as effective at conveying the
meaning behind the image if it had a wider depth of field because l think it would
distract from the rubbish/ litter. There is no composition within this image
because the rule of thirds can't be applied and there are no leading lines. The
lack of composition fits well with Keith Arnatt style of photography. I think this
image successfully conveys the meaning I want to put across in my images: that
littering and execs rubbish is bad for the environment because the rubbish in this
image is overflowing an out of control.

This image is of the same subject as the previous image however it is taken from
a different viewpoint and angle. I took this image whilst kneeling down on the
floor pointing my camera directly towards the arm chairs. This means that the
audience can see the chair in the image much more clearly. The shapes of the
rubbish are much clearer in this image compared to the previous one where the
shapes aren't as obvious. Similarly to the previous image the rubbish fills the
frame. This helps to convey the meaning behind my image because other
irrelevant elements don't distract from the main subject. This image is in colour
which again I enhanced on photoshop through increasing the vibrance and
saturation. l also made the image brighter and added contrast to make the
rubbish stand out more and to make it more visually appealing. I used a fast
shutter speed because I wanted the image to be crisp so the audience can see
the details within the rubbish very clearly. Like the previous image this image has
an in-between depth of field because there are quite a few element within the
image that are in focus however not enough to make it have a deep depth of
field. There is no composition within this image because the rule of thirds can't
be applied and there are no leading lines. The lack of composition fits well with
Keith Arnatt style of photography. However I think this image isn’t as abstract as
the previous one because the shapes are clearer therefore this doesn't fit as well
will Keith Arnatt style of photography. This image doesn’t convey the meaning
behind the images as well as the previous image because the rubbish doesn't
look as out of control.
This image is of the same subject as the previous two images in this shoot
however it is taken from the other side therefore the audience can see different
parts of the pile of the rubbish. In this image the audience can see the typewriter,

parts of the arm chairs, lamp shade and some of the cardboard. I like how the
audience can see different type of rubbish in this image. This image is in colour
to stick with Keith Arnatt style of photography. The colours in this image are
quite muted however I did enhance them on photoshop through increasing the
vibrance and saturation. I used a fast shutter speed to take this image to make
the image crisp. I wanted the image to be crisp because I think that it makes it
more interesting to look at because it means that small details can be seen. This
image has an in-between depth of field because all the elements of rubbish are

in focus in the image however there aren't many elements in the background in
focus. This depth of field allows the audience to foley focus on the rubbish rather
than getting distracted by other elements. Similarly to the other images in this
shoot this image has no composition. The lack of composition could reflected
the uncontrollable overflow of rubbish which could reflect the problems with litter
pollution. I like this image because I think that is successfully reflects the
message I am trying to convey the problem with litter pollution. I don't like the
van in the top right of the image because I think that it distracts from the main
subject.

This image is similar to the previous image in this shoot because it is of the same
subject however it is taken from a closer up viewpoint. This means that the

audience can't see the same amount of rubbish compared to the previous
image. I like how the audience can see more details within the image for
example the detail within the typewriter. The green arm chairs aren't as clear in
this image they're the rubbish in the image looks more rubbish like. This image is
in colour because l think it makes the image look more interesting and more
vibrant. I enhanced the image on photoshop by increasing the contrast and
brightness as well as increasing the vibrance of the image. I used a fast shutter
speed to take this image because I wanted the image to be crisp so the

audience can see the details within the image very clearly. The details within the
image are what makes it engaging and visually appealing. This image has a
narrow depth of field because there are only a few elements of the rubbish in
focus. The depth of field of this image doesn't help to communicate my meaning
behind this shoot because the audience can't see much of the rubbish. There is
no composition in this image because there is are no leading lines and the rule of
thirds can't be applied. I like the effect that this has on the image because it
gives the impression that the rubbish is out of control due to the lack of
structure. My favourite thing about this image is how it looks chaotic because it
reflects the meaning I am trying to convey.
This image is very similar to the previous two images in this shoot however it is
taken from a very close up point of view. In this image all the audience can see is
the is the typewriter and some litter in the background. There is a lot of detail

within this image: the audience therefore the audience get a greater
understanding of what the typewriter is like. This image is landscape, large and
rectangular which is inviting for the audience to look at. This image is in colour to
make it more interesting because the added colours make the image vibrant.
This image has a narrow depth of field which means that there are only a small
amount of elements in focus in the photograph. The depth of field of this image
means that the message that the message I am trying to convey isn't clear. If the
audience understand where the image is taken then the meaning is slightly
clearer however at first glance the image just shows a typewriter. If I was to
improve this image I would use a wider depth of field so the audience can see
more of the rubbish and therefore understand the intended meaning - the litter/
rubbish pollution. This image also lack composition because the viewpoint it is
taken at means that there are no leading lines and the rule of thirds can't be
applied. My favourite thing about this image is the intricate details which the
typewrite because I think it makes the image more interesting to look at. The
details within the image also add more meaning because they suggest it is old.

This image is very similar to the previous image in this shoot because it is of the
same subject however it is taken from a different point of view. I took this image
whilst kneeling down on the floor and pointing my camera towards the metal. In

the previous image I pointed by camera directly down towards the floor. I think
that this point of view is more effective at conveying my meaning because I think
that it is clearer that the subject is litter/ rubbish however in the previous image it
isn’t as clear because the depth of field was narrower. This image is large,
rectangular and landscape image. I kept the image in colour because I think the
colours much more interesting to look at. I like how the bright colours contrast
the dark metal and concrete because it makes the colours stand out more. I used
a fast shutter speed to take this image because it was important to me that the
image was crisp as there are a lot of small intricate detail that I wanted the
audience to see clearly. This image has an in-between depth of field because
there are quite a few elements within the image that are in focus. The depth of
field allows the audience to understand what the subject is. There is no
composition in this the rule of thirds can’t be applied and there are no leading
lines. The lack of composition gives the impression that the subject hasn’t been
manipulated and they was it is placed on the floor is authentic. My favourite thing
about this image is the broken glass because I think that it makes the image
more appealing to look at because it make it more exiting to look at.

This image is taken pointing my camera directly down to a pile of litter. I this
image the audience can see a lot of different types of broken plastic in a pile, a
pink teddy bear, a stick and a blue wheel carrier. There are many elements in the
one image. This image is large, rectangular and landscape. The image is in
colour because there are details within the image which look better in colour for
example the bright pink teddy bear makes the image a lot more interesting to
look at because without it the image would have dark monotone colours and
uninteresting shapes. I enhanced the image in photoshop through increasing the
brightness and the vibrance of the image which makes the bright colours stand
out more. I used a fast shutter speed to take this image because I wanted the
image to be crisp so the audience can see the shapes clearly. This image has an
in-between death of field which allows the understand what the subject is of - a
pile of litter. If the depth of field was too narrow then the audience would
understand the message I am trying to convey. There is no composition within
this image because there are no leading lines and the rule of thirds can’t be
applied. I think that this image successfully conveys the meaning I am trying to
put across - that litter and rubbish is bad.
E VA L U AT I O N
In this shoot I think that I successfully portrayed a negative view of litter
pollution. Shooting at the tip meant that there was various types of different
litter to photograph for example old sofa and typewriters. Shooting items like
these meant that the audience could gain an understanding of all different
types of rubbish people through away and the big problem it is. The items of
rubbish in the images are not typically litter therefore l don't think the message
is conveyed very effectively because I don't think the audience will realise it
immediately. My favourite images win this shoot are the first three because
they have a combination of typical littering items cardboard and old tables. My
least favourite image is the close up image of the typewriter because it
doesn't convey the meaning at all.

The images in this shoot are full of uniques shapes which are created through
the rubbish. I like this because it means that the images are more interesting.
There is little composition within the images because of the nature of what I
am shooting. The lack of composition suggests that the rubbish in the images
is out of control. The images are in colour which I enhanced on photoshop
through increasing the vibrance and saturation on photoshop. There are a
range of depth of fields because I used varied viewpoints.

This shoot was inspired by Keith Arnatt because he shot at a Keith Arnatt
images didn't have much composition and neither do my images. My images
are not very abstract compared to Keith Arnatt therefore in my next shoot I
think that I am going to explore making them more abstract.

In my next shoot I think I am going to explore shooting more typical litter

looking at carrier bags and bottles. I think that this will convey the meaning
behind my image more effectively because it will be proper litter that has been
left.
