James Welling has challenging photographs.

James Welling new

abstractions images go between painting, sculpture and traditional
photography. They consist of black and white abstract photographs
created by dropping long strips of solid black intertwined lines of
varying thickness arranged on white back grounds. Welling's
structuralist approach to photography has allowed him to explore the
infinite formal and theoretical facts of picture making. Throughout his
series' Welling isolates light and the mechanics of the camera, tying his
practice to painting and its relationship to photograph. Rather than
document the subject, he places the emphasis on how light articulates
form and how framing determines composition

document of the state of mind of the
photographer. And if you were to
extend the idea of the set-up JAMES
photograph beyond just the physically
setting up the picture, I would argue
that the photographer wills the picture WELLING
into being”

James Welling is going to
influence my decision making
because I am going to create
images on photoshop by
arranging black rectangles
similar to how James Welling did
it using light. I am going to
create images with a lot of
contrast and I am going to make
my image black and white.
These images are large, portrait and rectangular. The images are very
similar - the only details within the images that are different are the
positioning of the lines and the thickness. Some of the lines go across
the image and some of the lines start within the image. There are very
clear shapes within the image. The image is in black and white which
means that there is a clear contrast in the image which makes the
shapes stand out. These images are made using a photogram therefore
neither a digital or film camera were used. These images has a narrow
depth of field because the amount of elements that are in the image are
limited. The lines in the images have no structure therefore the image
doesn’t relate to the rule of thirds. There are also no leading lines in the
image therefore this image lacks composition.
