Lesson Plan

Cellular Division: Meiosis

Summary
1. Subject: Biology
2. Topic or Unit of Study: Cellular Division: Meiosis
3. Grade/Level: High School
4. Objective:

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to correctly identify, label, and
model meiosis.

5. Time Allotment: 2-3 weeks as needed

Implementation
Procedure
a. Anticipatory Set

Watch the Stop Motion Video as an example of how we want to end the
lesson. Ask students to express any concerns or questions they may have.

b. Direct Instruction

Go over relative articles with information, taking notes as relevant

information comes up. Ask students to reword what they deem as important
information.

c. Guided Practice

Pull up images depicting the different stages on the board. Have students
form pairs and “challenge” them to label as many different aspects as they
can.

d. Check for Understanding

1
Hand out a short multiple choice worksheet that students will do individually
before we start the main project.

e. Independent Practice

Let the students choose a group of three, and over the next week they will
create a stop motion video depicting the different stages of meiosis, and how
the cell transitions between each stage.

f. Closing

Show the videos as a class, and ask students to politely point out any points
that they disagree with, along with some points that they feel each group did
well.

For example: “I think you mixed up Anaphase I and Anaphase II. In

addition, I really liked how you transitioned between each stage.”

The goal of this is to create discussion, root out any misunderstandings, and
solidify what each phase of meiosis is. It would also help students to see what
is good about their projects.

Materials & Resources

a. Instructional Resources:
a. Meiosis articles, and note sections
b. Meiosis Stop Motion Video- YouTube
c. Project Materials:
i. Modeling Clay
ii. String/Paper Clips/ Other 3D representations (as desired by
students)
iii. Background/Details paper
iv. Electronic Photo Taking Device

Assessment
Give the students a short quiz made up of multiple choice, fill in the blank, and
matching questions. This will test that they can tell you what they know, and apply
the information to example/illustrations.
