Overall expectation 1:

1.

a)

- Atoms:

+ Neutrally charged
+ Not attracted to an electrical field
+ Composed of an equal number of protons and electrons
+ Consist of subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, electrons
+ The smallest particles of matter
+ Not stable alone
+ Cannot be separated into subatomic particles by chemical reactions

- Ions:

+ Positively or negatively charged

+ Composed of an unequal number of protons and electrons
+ Attracted to an electrical field

- Molecules:

+ Made of two or more atoms

+ Consist of more than two atoms which can be either of the same or
different elements
+ Stable alone
+ Can be separated into atoms by chemical reactions

b)

- Atoms: Au (Gold)

- Ions: ( Sodium-Ion )

- Molecules: ( Water )

2.
The nitrogen -14 is in the largest abundance

3.

- Ionic:

+ Occurs between metals and non-metals atoms

+ Electrons are transferred from the metal to the non-metal

+ Atoms become ions ( metals are positive and non-metals are negative )

- Molecular substances:

+ Occurs between two non-metals

+ Electrons are shared between atoms

+ Atoms join to form molecules

4.

a) (Ionic)

b) (Covalent) (Single bond)

c) (Covalent) (Single bond)

d) (Covalent) (Single and Triple bond)

5.

- Substance A is non-polar covalent because it has the lowest melting temperature and it
is insoluble in water

- Substance B is polar covalent because it has a low melting point and it is soluble in
water

- Substance C is ionic because it has a high melting point and it is soluble in water.

Chemical Formula and Name x If incorrect, explain what is wrong and why it If incorrect, what is the correct
or is incorrect name?

x is nitrate and has one minus charge

so the total negative charge is negative
three. Because the overall compound has to
be neutral so the charge on Cobalt must be
plus three

x The prefix of nitrogen is missing because it

has two atoms

x The charge of is 2- so to be neutral,

the charge of chromium has to be plus two

7.

a) Antimony (III) oxide

The symbol for Antimony (III) is Sb. It has the charge of three plus. The symbol for Oxide
is O. It has the charge of two minus. In order to balance the charge we need two
antimony (III) ions and 3 oxide ions. So the chemical formula is

b) Nitrogen trifluoride

The symbol for nitrogen is N. The symbol for flouride is F. Because fluoride has the
prefix “tri”, it means it will have three of it. So the chemical formula is
c) Calcium hydroxide

The symbol for calcium is Ca. It has the charge of two plus. The symbol for hydroxide is
OH. It has the charge of one minus. Because the overall compound has to be neutral, so
we must have two hydroxide to balance the charge. So, the chemical formula is

d) Sodium phosphide

The symbol for sodium is Na. It has the charge of one plus. The symbol for phosphide is
P. It has the charge of three minus. Because the overall compound has to be neutral, so
we must have 3 sodium to balance the charge. So, the chemical formula is

8.

a) Because ionic compound formulas are always written in the empirical formula, meaning
they’re written with the minimum number of atoms required.

b)

Overall expectation 2:

1.
a)

i) 1

ii) 8

iii) 2

iv) 9,10

v) 1,3,8

b) 4,6,7

3.

As going across the period 3 to the right, the atomic radius will decrease. Therefore, Mg has a
larger atomic radius than P. As going down the group 5A, the atomic radius will increase.
Therefore, P has a larger atomic radius than N. The atoms N,Mg and P in decreasing order of
atomic radius is Mg > P > N .

4.

As going across the period 3 to the right , the ionization energy increases. Therefore, Cl has
more ionization energy than Si. As going down the group 4A, the ionization energy decreases.
Therefore, Si has more ionization energy than Ge. The atoms Cl, Si and Ge in decreasing order
of ionization energy is Cl > Si > Ge.

5.

As going across the period 5 to the right, the electronegativity increases. Therefore, Iodine has
more electronegativity than Indium. As going down the group 7A, the electronegativity
decreases. Therefore, Iodine has less electronegativity than bromine. The atoms Br, In and I in
decreasing order is Br > I > In.
6.

Metallic character refers to the level of reactivity of a metal. Non-metallic character relates to the
tendency to accept electrons during chemical reactions. As a result, metallic trend increases
going down a group and non-metallic trend increases going from left to right across the periodic
table.

7.
a) Y,X,Z

b) Vineger is a weak acid, only the most reactive one reacts to vineger. For the strong acid
like hydrochloric, the more reactive the metal is,the faster the reaction.

c) In the same period, the less the outermost electron, the more reactive the metal
is,because it is easy to lose the electron.

Overall expectation 3:

1.

a)

b)

2.

a)
b)

3.

a)

The mass of oxygen burned is:

b)

c)

d)
Percent Mass Moles Divide Mole ratio
composition (Assuming 100g) (n=m/M) (by the lowest # of (Round off or
moles) multiply)

30.44%N 1

69.56%O 2

So the emprical formula is

e)

If there were 100mg of oxide, there will be 30.44 mg nitrogen
