Article Review: Hickel’s ‘De-Development’

1.) What is the framework of ‘dedevelopment’ of rich countries all about?

The main objective is to eradicate poverty by 2030 but the number of people living in
poverty has been increasing more than 1.1 billion. There are more developing types that
we need to shift some of the yields from the richer segments of the population to the
poorer ones.

2.) How is the ‘de-develop’ framework different from traditional framework of

development?

‘De-develop’ framework also eradicates poverty in country that are poor and for me it is
traditinal fot those country who are poor, but some developing in Hickel’s de-develop is
to change the rules of global economy and not only the end of the poverty.

3.) According to Hickel, How can rich countries ‘de-develop’?

According to the idea of ‘de-developing rich countries mght not be approved by the
global south but rich countries can ‘de-develop’ by reducing the consumption. There are
people where they just want show off their wealth and that should be stopped.

4.) Why does hickel frown upon pundits using terms such as de-growth, zero-growth, or de-
developent in decribing an alternative framework?

The problem is that pundits promoting this kind of transition are using the wrong
language which they give a negative insight about the progress within a country and
according to hickel, these terms are technically accurate but off-pulling for anyone who’s
not already on board.

5.) Some people might think that ‘de-develop’ is about giving things up, How does Hickel
explain that this is not the case.

‘De-developing’ do not tell us to give things up. It’s about reaching a higher level of
understanding and conciousness about what were doing here and why and certainly about
achieving the goals while maintaining happines and long life expectancy.
