Instructions: After reading Hickel’s article on the concept of de-development,
answer the following question in two to three sentence.

1. What is the framework of de-development of rich countries all about?

According to Jason Hickel, growth is no longer an option since we have grown too
much and are now in the midst of a worldwide crisis caused almost exclusively by
overconsumption in developed countries. Moreover, de-developing countries are
about catching up to the developed countries and bringing them to more
appropriate levels of development.

2. How is the de-development framework different from traditional framework

of development?

The gap between a de-development framework and a traditional framework

The traditional foundation for development is to try to develop poorer countries,
or to be more specific, to eradicate poverty. While the de-development
framework is the polar opposite of the traditional framework, it focuses on
bringing the wealthy countries down. The term "catching down" refers to a
person's or a country's consumption demands being reduced.

3. According to Hickel, how can rich countries de-develop?

Rich Countries can de-develop by reducing the wants and needs of each
individual
or the consumption of rich countries to meet the more appropriate levels of
development and also, this is the solution to the global crisis of overconsumption.

4Why does Hickel frown upon pundits using terms such as de-growth, zero
growth, or dedevelopment in describing an alternative framework?
According to Hickel, due to the misuse of the term or the language of the experts
such as de-growth, zero growth, de-development has an impact or negative
effect on the idea of de-development as the people misunderstood the idea of
de-development because these terms are technically accurate but off-putting for
anyone who’s not already on board.
5. Some people might think that de-development is about giving things up. How
does Hickel explain that this is not the case?
Some think that the development framework is a negative idea, instead of
looking at the framework as a positive one because they are against it and think
negatively. So that the people stop moving positively through life, they also stop
learning, improving, growing as they try to worsen the situation, and yet they still
don’t get the framing right.
