What is BIM?

BUILDING
INFORMATION
MODEL

A digital representation of the physical and functional

characteristics of a building project & its life cycle.
What is BIM?
Building Information Model, attributes & properties
1. Object oriented (3D elements not 2D vector lines)
2. Intelligent & Parametric (all objects are interlink with logical
relationships-any change is propagated to all views)
3. Able to expand to 4D (time) & 5D (cost)
4. “Interoperability” to structural analysis engines with bi-
directional transfer
5. Clash detection capability to produce coordinated drawings
among other disciplines (Archi, Structural, MEP, Civil, etc.)
What is BIM?
Structural Engineer has 2 key deliverables:
1. Construction Documentation (submission & tender drawings)
2. Code Compliant Design Calculation Report (BS or EN)

Structural
Engineer

Structural Engineer has a pivotal role for adoption of BIM

Transfer of design intent from Architect to M&E, Builder, & FM
Why BIM?
1. Productivity
doing more with less

2. Integrated Project Delivery

collaboration with other disciplines

3. Automated Drawings
submission, tender, shop, fabrication, as built drawings

4. Unique & radical building design

Innovative structural solutions

5. Catch up with design changes

BIM Deliverables

A: At early design B: As design develops, structural analysis and C. During construction, more detailed
stage, no information design is used to determine the piling information is required in the form of rebar
of piling is required. required, and details such as rebars can be cutting shop drawings.
drawn as 2D lines for authority approval.
Rebars can be represented as 2D lines or 3D
objects in the BIM model.
