Rhetorical Analysis

“DEUTSCHLAND”

First off, if you have read any of my other work in this class. This should not surprise you

to why I chose this song. This song was created by German Rock Band Rammstein. It was

released on March 28, 2019 for the band’s new album. It made No. 1 single in Germany,

Hungary, and Switzerland. To fully understand this song, I suggest watching the music video

with it.

Deutschland is a song that is difficult to categorize. Yes, it is a rock song. But the

members of Rammstein are different in the fact that they make music for themselves first and

foremost. Their songs are edgy but make you think about things in different perspectives. This

song can fall under being a love song. The band all agrees in what is sang in this song. The Lead

singer Till Lindemann displays how he feels about his home country.

Being that this song is written in German, when looking at the lyrics you also have to

understand German dialogue a bit. In this song till says “Germany, my heart is in flames, I want

to love and damn you, Germany your breaths so cold, so young and yet so old.” “Deutschland,

Mein herz in flammen, will dich lieben und verdammen, Deutschland, Dein atem kalt, so jung

und doch so alt.” There he is using an epizeuxis with the word Germany. He is singing to the

country, the land, the place, Germany.

The song tells the story of how he loves his country but feels that he cannot due to what

Germany has done with its time and cultural. The Music video really does justice here because

most people think Germanys history is Nazi and not much else. The lyrics tell you Germany is

much more than history has made it to be with things that are great and tragic.

The lyrics “Ubermachtig, uberflussig, ubermenchen, uberdrussig, we hoch steigt, der

wird tief fallen, Deutschland Deutschland uber allen.” “overpowering, superfluous,

superhuman, weary, those who climb high will fall deep, Germany, Germany, Above all.”

This part of the song shows an antanagoge because hes saying how great and terrible Germany

has been all together. Now it’s difficult to categorize what the song really means because

Rammstein makes the music for themselves. One must interpret this song with their own

knowledge to guess what is being stated from the band.

This song is slandering Germany and showing love and compassion for Germany as well.

My father was so proud to be a full German but always kept to himself about it because of the

history. I also feel a small since of pride coming from German decent and when I was younger

was not vocal or ever acknowledged my heritage due to History. This song reached me because

I know that myself and father are not alone in having pride in our bloodline but still recognizing

the tragedies that came from a dark terrible time in history.

Lyrics

Verse 1]
You (You have, you have, you have, you have)
Have cried a lot (Cried, cried, cried, cried)
Separated in spirit (Separated, separated, separated, separated)
United in heart (United, united, united, united)
We (We are, we are, we are, we are)
Have been together for so long (You are, you are, you are, you are)
Your breath's cold (So cold, so cold, so cold, so cold)
The heart in flames (So hot, so hot, so hot, so hot)
You (You can, you can, you can, you can)
I (I know, I know, I know, I know)
We (We are, we are, we are, we are)
You (You stay, you stay, you stay, you stay)

[Chorus]
Germany – my heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
Germany – your breath's cold
So young, and yet so old
Germany!

[Verse 2]
I (You have, you have, you have, you have)
I never want to leave you (You cry, you cry, you cry, you cry)
One can love you (You love, you love, you love, you love)
And wants to hate you (You hate, you hate, you hate, you hate)
Presumptuous, superior
Take over, hand over/puke
Surprise, invade
Germany, Germany above everyone

[Chorus]
Germany – my heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
Germany – your breath is cold
So young, and yet so old
Germany – your love
Is a curse and a blessing
Germany – my love
I can't give you
Germany!
Germany!

[Bridge]
You
I
We
All of you
You (superior/overpowering, unnecessary)
I (Übermenschen weary)
We (The higher you climb, the further you fall)
You (Germany, Germany above everyone)

[Chorus]
Germany – your heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
Germany – my breath's cold
So young, and yet so old
Germany – your love
Is a curse and blessing
Germany – my love
I can't give you
Germany!

Im Herz vereint (Vereint, vereint, vereint, vereint)
Wir (Wir sind, wir sind, wir sind, wir sind)
Sind schon sehr lang zusammen (Ihr seid, ihr seid, ihr seid, ihr seid)
Dein Atem kalt (So kalt, so kalt, so kalt, so kalt)
Das Herz in Flammen (So heiß, so heiß, so heiß, so heiß)
Du (Du kannst, du kannst, du kannst, du kannst)
Ich (Ich weiß, ich weiß, ich weiß, ich weiß)
Wir (Wir sind, wir sind, wir sind, wir sind)
Ihr (Ihr bleibt, ihr bleibt, ihr bleibt, ihr bleibt)

[Refrain]
Deutschland! Mein Herz in Flammen
Will dich lieben und verdammen
Deutschland! Dein Atem kalt
So jung und doch so alt
Deutschland!

Ich (Du hast, du hast, du hast, du hast)
Ich will dich nie verlassen (Ich weiß, ich weiß, ich weiß, ich weiß)
Man kann dich lieben (Du liebst, du liebst, du liebst, du liebst)
Und will dich hassen (Du hast, du hast, du hast, du hast)
Überheblich, überlegen
Übernehmen, übergeben
Überraschen, überfallen
Deutschland, Deutschland über allen

[Refrain]
Deutschland! Mein Herz in Flammen
Will dich lieben und verdammen
Deutschland! Dein Atem kalt
So jung und doch so alt
Deutschland! Deine Liebe
Ist Fluch und Segen
Deutschland! Meine Liebe
Kann ich dir nicht geben
Deutschland!
