Solvay Demulsifiers

Crude oil is seldom produced by itself. In most cases, it is produced together with a certain
percentage of water and the produced fluid is usually presented in the form of an emulsion.
The water content depends very much on factors such as the age of the field, whether water
injection has been applied, and composition of the formation fluid. The produced fluid needs to
be separated as crude oil needs to meet a certain specification before it can enter the refinery.
In addition, water that is produced needs to be almost free of oil before it can be reintroduced to
the environment.

Various techniques including mechanical, thermal and electrical methods have been used in the
field to enhance the separation of oil and water. Apart from these techniques, the chemical
method of using demulsifiers is also very popular. Demulsifiers are surface active compounds
which when added to the emulsion will migrate to the oil-water interface and rupture or weaken
the rigid film and enhance coalescence of water droplets.
