Food is the material that an organism takes for energy, growth,
and maintaining the processes of life.
There is a lot of variation in the food eaten in different regions of
India.
Things common in our meals:
An item made of grain
A dal or a dish of meat
Vegetables
Curd or buttermilk
Pickles
Salad
NUTRIENTS
Nutrients are the chemical compounds in food that are used by
the body to function properly and maintain health. Examples
include proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
CARBOHYDRATES
The foods we eat contain nutrients that provide
energy and other things the body needs. Energy
giving nutrients are carbohydrates. The two main
forms of carbohydrates are sugars such as
glucose and starch, which are found in foods such
as starchy vegetables, grains, rice, breads, and
cereals. The body breaks down (or converts) most
carbohydrates into the sugar glucose, which is
absorbed into the bloodstream.
Sources of carbohydrates
Aim :-
To test the presence of starch in a given food sample.
Apparatus required :-
Dilute Iodine solution, food sample, a dropper, etc.
Pre requisite knowledge :-
If the Iodine solution is dropped over a sample containing starch then its color turns
Blue-Black.
Procedure :-
● Take the food sample provided like potato
● With the help of a dropper pour the Iodine solution over the given food sample.
Observation:
● The Iodine solution turns Blue-Black then there is the presence of Starch in it
otherwise not.
Inference: It shows that potato is a good source of starch.
