and Nutrition
Health

According to WHO,
health is the state of
complete physical,
social, and mental
well-being, and not
merely the absence
of any disease and
infirmity.
The essential requirements of
health include:
• Optimal growth and development
• Maintenance of structural integrity and
functional capacity of the body
• Ability to withstand the process of aging with
minimal loss of ability
• Ability to fight diseases as shown by
resisting infections
• Preventing the onset of degenerative
diseases
• Resisting the effect of environmental
pollutants and toxins
Food
• Derived from plant or animal sources
• Provide energy and nutrients which are used by
the body for maintenance, growth and repair
Our Need for Food

• Food affects almost everything we do. It affects


how we look, feel, and act. It even affects our
abilities – how well we function every day.
• Food has an impact on life because it supplies
nutrients, which are substances in food that body
needs to function properly such as in growing, in
repairing itself, and in having supply of energy.
Nutrition
• Derived from the Latin word “nutrire” which means feed
or nourish
• Nutrition is both a pure science and a social science. As
a pure science it looks at how the body uses nutrients.
As a social science it looks at the relationship between
food and human behavior and the environment, or how
and why people eat.

Nutrition

Nutrients

specific dietary constituents such as proteins,
vitamins and minerals.

Malnutrition

Phytochemicals
• Phytochemicals are defined as bioactive nutrient plant
chemicals in fruits, vegetables, grains, and other plant

beyond basic nutrition to reduce the risk of major
chronic diseases:
– Carotenoids – carrots, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables
– Polyphenols (flavonoids, isoflavonoids, anthocyanidins) –
fruis, vegetables, cereals
– Fibers – fruits & vegetables
– Polysaccharides – fruits and vegetables
Balanced Diet
• A balanced diet is a diet that
contains differing kinds of
foods in certain quantities
and proportions so that the
requirement for calories,
proteins, minerals, vitamins
and alternative nutrients is
adequate and a small
provision is reserved for
additional nutrients to endure
the short length of leanness.
Eating for Healthy Living
Food Guide
• The Philippines uses the daily
nutritional guide pyramid and has
developed pyramids for different
population groups. The pyramid is
divided into levels of recommended
consumption. Messages about
exercise and personal and
environmental hygiene serve as
support messages for the pyramid.
• The healthy food plate for Filipino
adults (Pinggang Pinoy) completes
the messages of the pyramid by
showing adequate distribution of
nutritious foods in a meal.

Carbohydrates

Cholesterol

Water-soluble Vitamins

environment that are essential to the body’s
functioning.
• Minerals are used to regulate a wide range of
body processes, from bone formation to blood
clotting, and they are important for the body
structure.
• Most minerals are either quickly used or lost in
waste products, therefore we must eat mineral-
rich foods daily to replenish our supply. Iron is
an exception –it tends to be kept and recycled
by the body, except when there is a blood loss.
