Why do we eat?
 1. For Peak Performance Energy
• Foods can be a valuable asset in how we
process our emotions and harness the power
of energy for our physical well-being.
• Good foods can enhance your body
performance at its peak, providing the
energy you need at work, taking care of your
family, exercising and doing the activities you
enjoy.
• But if you choose the wrong foods…they can
decrease your energy level…which will
produce poor performance results at work,
home and no energy to do all the things you
love to do.
2. For Growth & Function
• What we eat must help us
regulate and maintain our bodily
functions. We carefully plan
what we eat for different stages
of growth to ensure the proper
development and function of the
body.
3. For Maintaining Our
External Shell
• Everything grows from
the inside out we put into
our bodies will affect our
external body.
4. For Prevention & Fighting Disease
• Grand Master in the martial arts drinks
Korean wild green tea every morning
because he says it fights cancer and
disease within the body. Everything
that he consciously eats is to prevent
disease or keep him healthy.
• The proper food and nourishment helps
us create a strong internal environment
that helps prevent and fight disease.
YOU ARE WHAT
YOU EAT!
Remember:

• Even the richest person in the

world does not enjoy life
without good health.
• A lot of money is spent on
finding cures, purchasing
medicines, and looking for ways
to prolong a sick person’s life.
What is Food?
• Food is a substance that consists of
chemical substances used by any
living organism to sustain growth,
repair, reproduction, development
and maintenance of vital processes.
Food contains energy that
the body needs.

“We can compare food

To a fuel and our body to a
car”
• Eating the right food provides our body with the
proper nutrients it needs.
• Humans depend on the nutrients in their diet because
the body either cannot produce them adequately or
not at all.
The six major classes of nutrients are:
1. Carbohydrates
2. Proteins
3. Fats
4. Vitamins
5. Minerals
6. Water
Carbohydrates
• Carbohydrates provide our body with
energy it needs.
• Aside from providing the body with
energy, they are also very important in
maintaining the health of digestive
system and are needed in the
production of a lubricant called
mucus.
• Carbohydrates include starch,
cellulose, glycogen, and sugars.
#1: CARBOHYDRATES
ARE SUGARS!

We get 4 kilocalories per gram

of carb that we eat!
• Fiber(cellulose), which is also a type
of carbohydrates, is the indigestible
material found in plant products,
such as fruits, vegetables, whole
grains, and beans.
• The risk of colon cancer is also
reduced by fiber when it spread up
the movement of food in the
intestines, thus lowering the
exposure of the colon to
carcinogens.
Fiber and Sugar
#3: PROTEINS
BUILD US

We get 4 kcals per gram

Of protein that we consume.
Proteins
• Protein is an essential part of every living
cell, tissue, and organ of the body. Meat,
eggs, milk, fish, nuts and legumes are rich
in proteins.
• Amino acids, the organic compounds that
form the building blocks of proteins, are
necessary for the growth and repair of
tissue cell.
Proteins
• Proteins may also be a source
of energy and are necessary
components in the formation
of antibodies to fight
diseases.
• The kinds of proteins our
body makes depend on the
genes we inherited from our
parents.
Proteins
• What do you inherit from your
parents that determines the proteins
your body makes?
• Genes
• They carry the instructions for
producing (expressing) all of the many
proteins in your body that determine
how you look and how your body
works.
Proteins
• Function of proteins
• Transport molecules in and
out of the cell
• Control the speed of chemical
reactions
• Used for growth and repair
• Proteins make up the
structure of living things
• Hair, nails, skin, bones,
muscle, etc are all built by
protein
Fats(Lipids)
• Fats, like carbohydrates, supply the body
with energy. Fats, however, can provide
more energy compared to carbohydrates
and proteins.
• We need fats in our body, but to much of
it can also result in severe health
problems.
• Lumen is the cavity of the blood vessels.
This condition is known as
arteriosclerosis.
Lipids
• Lipids can be:
• Saturated:
• Solid at room temperature
• Mainly animal fats (bacon grease, lard)

• Unsaturated:
• Liquid at room temperature
• Mainly plant based fats (olive oil, peanut
oil) as well as oily fish (Tuna, Sardines)
Lipids: Hydrophobic • Central core of glycerol
molecules • Bound to up to 3 fatty acid chains
-Lipids are • They exhibit a high number of C-H bonds – therefore
Hydrophobic (water much energy and non-polar
fearing) and do not • When placed in water, lipids spontaneously cluster
together
dissolve in water.
• They help organize the interior content of cells 
“phospholipids”
Vitamins and Minerals
• Vitamins and minerals do not provide us
with energy, but they are necessary for
various processes in the body.

• Fat-soluble vitamins are those that

stored in our body
• Water-soluble vitamins are those that
are excreted from our body when they
are in excessive amounts.
Minerals
• Minerals are inorganic elements, and like vitamins, they also
cannot be manufactured by the body.
• Calcium, iodine, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium,
sulfur and zinc are only some minerals we need in our diet.
• For example, calcium is essential in building our bones and
teeth. Lack of calcium can lead to a condition known as
osteoporosis.
• Osteoporosis may occur at any age, but is most common in
women who have reached menopause.
• Another mineral, iron helps in the
formation of hemoglobin, which is
necessary in the transport of oxygen.
• Severe iron deficiency may lead to
anemia, a condition wherein the
number of red blood cells (RBC) or
quantity of hemoglobin in the blood is
very low.
How important is water to the body?
Why should we drink 8-10 glasses of water a day.
• Our body is composed of
approximately 60% water. A person
can survive for a long time without
food, but not without water, a person
can die within days without water.
Water
• Water helps in digestions and it is a big help
in preventing constipation.
• It also acts as a lubricant of the membranes
that surround our body organs and also acts
as the body’s coolant.
