Science Work from Home Options
Choose from the projects below to work on at home. Some are 5 points and some are 10.
You must complete 20 points worth.
Take a nature walk. On your walk
make note of the ecosystem
dynamics you observe. Do you see
moss growing on a tree? What
consumers and producers do you
see? What biotic and abiotic
factors? Write 3 paragraphs
documenting your walk or record a
video (at least 5 minutes) and share
with me.

Write a song or poem to help you
remember the metric system and
how to make metric conversions
(such as how to figure out meters,
cm, km, and mm). Alternate topic:
the temperature of
freezing/melting and boiling point
of water.
You can film yourself reciting the
song/poem or share with me via
Office365
(5 points)
Read a scientific news article and
write a paragraph summary about
the article. Include how the science
described in the article impacts
everyday life.

Note: If you want to do one “bigger” experiment related to what we’ve been doing, you can do
that for 15 points. It will need to have a materials list, step by step procedures, and your
results!

While on your “trip” make a list of
at least 10 interesting facts you
have learned and share the list with
me.

Design and build your very own
Rube Goldberg machine. Watch the
following video if you don’t know
that this is. The idea is to
accomplish a very simple task, in a
very complicated way. Send me a
video of your machine in action.

Watch a science documentary and
write a 2 paragraph summary of
what you learned. The following
link is a list of great documentaries
you can find on Netflix.

Plan a trip to a National or
Provincial Park (here in Canada or
abroad) with your family. Make a
list of 5 sites you will see. Include
examples of biotic and abiotic
factors, plus herbivores, carnivores,
omnivores, producers, and
decomposers you might see on
your trip. Share list with me.

Try a fun science experiment! This
website has a lot of great ideas.
Take a picture or a video of yourself
doing the experiment and share it
with me. Rock candy, making ice
cream, and eggshell geodes relate
directly to what we’ve been doing
in class!
Not on the website: freeze the
same amount of different liquids
(water, saltwater, sugar-water, oil,
rubbing alcohol, etc.), and check in
the freezer every so often to see
how long it takes – make a chart!
(check with a parent that they are
ok with you always opening the
freezer!) Or freeze them and see
how long they take to melt.

Go fossil hunting! Go on a hunt for
fossils. On the way see if you can
find and identify at least 1
sedimentary rock, one igneous
rock, and 1 metamorphic rock. Take
a picture of your findings and email
them to me with a brief summary.
