Evolution and Natural Selection Menu

Directions: Over the course of the unit, you must pick four of the following choices to complete.
You have the option of which four you choose. The assignments are attached within the table
with a description below of what each selection consists of. All of these assignments are to be
turned in on google classroom under the correct assignment.

Descriptions:
1) Evolution Article and Vocabulary Worksheet:
- Read the attached article and complete the worksheet that goes along with it. By
reading the article, this will allow you to be able to better understand how evolution has
occurred throughout time. The article includes vocabulary words that are pertinent to
understanding what evolution truly is. These should be review for you, and should help
you further understand evolution. This will be used as a review activity in class, allowing
the students to be able to reflect on what we have previously learned and see how the
vocabulary words will most likely be showing up on their quiz. This article also gives
great insight to how evolution has occurred over time as it shows the progression. This
assignment is worth a total of 5 points. Two for correctly reading the article and
highlighting relevant information. Two points for correctly completing the worksheet and
filling it out with complete sentences and a well thought out explanation, and one point
for creating a sentence of your own with each vocabulary word. Students will be able to
use it to complete ISTE 3a to be able to locate information and use it to complete
effective research strategies that will build later into their argumentative essay.
2) Gizmo on Natural Selection
- As we progress through natural selection, we will be talking about the main examples
showing the finches and the peppered moths. These two examples show how evolution
has occurred over time, and how natural selection has taken place. This is the first time
this year that we will be completing gizmos. Under the gizmo tab, there are directions to
how you create and log into your gizmo account. You will then find a link to the correct
gizmo on natural selection. The website, as well as the required google document
worksheet is added. You need to make sure that you use complete sentences and
have well thought out responses, as well as make sure your tables have
percentages not just numbers. This will help each student to be the prey and see how
difficult it is to eat the peppered moths when they are able to blend into their surrounding
environment, showing that those better adapted to their environment will tend to survive.
This assignment will be out of 10 points. You will get 2 points for completing each
section (There are three sections) you will also receive one point for making sure you
have percentages correctly used in your tables, and three points for complete sentences
and well thought out responses. This will allow students to be able to complete ISTE 5b
and collect information, analyze them, and show their results in a different variety of
ways.

3) Brainpop Video and Worksheet

- This brainpop video is an introduction to natural selection. It shows Moby and
Tim showcasing how Charles Darwin first discovered the theory of evolution and
how he studied the finches that came from the Galapagos islands. You will be
required to sign into the brainpop using the information on the worksheet. The
video is a good introduction of also key vocabulary words while showing it in an
easy to understand way. This particular video is rather short, under 5 minutes so
it gives good information in a short period of time. There is a worksheet
accompanied with it. The worksheet will ask four different questions based on the
video, with also having you write down three things that you learned throughout
the video. You need to make sure these answers are in complete sentences or
you will be marked down. There is a 2nd page where you are given a table. You
have to write two environmental pressures for each of the four organisms within
the table, and provide two variations for the animals as well in regards to their
environmental pressures. This assignment is out of 5 points. One for correctly
filling out the first page, two for correctly completing the table, and two for
complete sentences. This will allow students to complete ISTE 3a, which will
have the students research and locate information to use to complete the
worksheet.
4) Peppered Moths Simulation and W orksheet
- This is one of the more explorative and fun options that you can complete. This
peppered moth simulation allows you to go back in time and see how evolution
started with Charles Darwin. It also allows you to see how the industrial
revolution affected the peppered moth population and how it shows evolution
over time to be critical to the survival of the species. You will have to do some
reading and answer the questions within the worksheet. Each section has about
three questions related to that particular reading. After all of the reading you will
be able to be the predator and try your best at finding the peppered moths and
eating them as your food. Be careful though, as you will be able to see some
easier than others. You will have to complete this worksheet using Kami. You will
be graded out of five points on this assignment. There will be two points for
correctly answering the worksheet, one point for correctly filling out the table, and
two points for using complete sentences. This assignment allows students to
complete ISTE 1C and using the technological tools to complete the assignment
and to improve their understanding of the material and how evolution is shown in
a real-world scenario.
5) Bill Nye Evolution Video and Notes
- Everyone knows Bill Nye the science guy! Well he is back and better than ever!
In this assignment you will be asked to watch the Bill Nye evolution video. As we
all know with Bill Nye, he is fantastic at showing how topics work with easy
examples. This video is no different, as he will show you throughout the video
how evolution is shown throughout organisms in our everyday lives. He will also
show you how organisms include animals and plants, as well as showing you
how the theory of evolution came to the forefront and how scientists have
adopted this with research and data to back up the theory and prove it to be true.
You will be asked to take fifteen notes on the video. The notes must be
numbered, in complete sentences, and be relative and pertinent to the video and
the overall topic of evolution. You will be graded out of five points for this
assignment. There will be one point for completing the fifteen notes, one point for
complete sentences, one point for numbering it correctly, and two points for
relative information. This assignment shows ISTE 2c by having the students
demonstrate an understanding of the video and technological aspect, while
understanding they are using property of others and to correctly cite their
information from the video.
6) Flap to the Future Game and Summary
- This is an extremely fun game, that shows how evolution has arisen over the
course of many of years. You will be taking the form of a dinosaur! You will be asked to
collect eggs and progress through the levels. There are four levels that you will have to
get through. The levels do get a little harder by having you collect more eggs as the
levels go on. You will be starting at a general dinosaur and progressing to a future bird.
As evolution progresses, you will be gaining a little bit more abilities and strengths of
those abilities. You will be asked to get to the end of the fourth level and take a
screenshot of you passing that level and then paste it on a google doc. Also on the
google doc, you will be asked to complete a five sentence summary about what you
have learned through the activity and how you see evolution being shown. The
sentences must be in complete sentences and be fluid. This assignment will be worth 5
points, 3 points for completing the fourth level, taking a screenshot, and pasting it on the
document, and two points for your five sentence summary. Students will be
demonstrating ISTE 7a to connect with the technological game and engage them in a
different way than they normally would and to broaden their understanding of evolution.
