Parts of the Self-Learning Module
The following are the parts of this module that will help you finish your tasks.
Read the following descriptions below to better understand each part.
4
I Need t o Know
This module is designed and written with you in mind. This will help and test
you to determine the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates (S6MTIIe-f-3).
The scope of this module allows you to use it in many different learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order of
information in which you read can be changed to correspond with the textbook you
are now using.
This module is composed of one lesson only:
• Lesson 1- Vertebrates

Lesson
1 Vertebrates
Lesson Overview
The most common characteristic of vertebrates is the presence of the
backbone. Vertebrates belong to the Phylum Chordata. Chordates (or vertebrates)
have internal skeletons called endoskeletons made of bones or cartilage. They each
have a nerve cord that runs down their backs, known as a central nervous system.
They have specialized body systems for the jobs of digestion, circulation, and
respiration. The vertebrate group is large and diverse so it is subdivided into five
groups: birds, mammals, fish, amphibians, and reptiles.
8
Vertebrate Description Examples
Group
Cold Blooded – animals whose body temperature changes depending on the temperature of
their surroundings
3. Fishes Animals that:
- lives in water
-have scales, tail, and fins
-have gills for breathing
- some are egg layers, others
are livebearers
9
I Will Do This
Activity 1: What am I?
Study the examples of vertebrate animals below and match them to the class
that they belong to based on their distinctive characteristics. Write the letters of the
correct answer on a separate sheet of pad paper.
_____ 2. b. MAMMALS
They are warm-blooded animals that
produce milk to feed their young.
Mammals have hair or fur on their
body.
_____ 3.
c. BIRDS
These warm-blooded animals lay
eggs and have feathers.
d. REPTILES
_____ 4.
These cold-blooded animals lay
eggs on land and have scaly dry
skin.
e. FISH
Fish are cold-blooded animals that
live in the water. They have scales,
______ 5.
fins, and gills.

Analysis Questions:
2. How will you describe vertebrate animals? Put a ( / ) check on the space
provided.
____ bones are replaced with cartilage
____ without backbones
____ have a developed brain ( in a skull )
____ have a complex nervous system
I Apply This
Fill-out the table by giving the details of animals found in your community. An
example is provided below.
