Create an Insect!

At the beginning of the week, we began our unit on insects. You have learned six parts of insects. With this project, you will
create your own bug using recycled art supplies. After creating your bug, you will answer a variety of questions in written
paragraph form. Finally, you will be creating an advertisement for a product that your insect produces to benefit society!
(Example: Bees produce honey, which has many health benefits for humans). You can create a drawing, a newspaper ad, a
PowerPoint presentation, or a commercial. If you have a different idea, just ask me and get approval for your idea. I can’t
wait to see your projects!

1. All projects will include the student’s name, date, and scientific insect name. Get creative when naming your insect!
2. Students must label the body parts on their insects (6 legs, 2 antennae, head, thorax, and abdomen)
3. Students must use recycled materials to build their insect. Some examples of these materials are; cans, straws, paper
towel rolls, boxes. Please have students use materials that can be used around the house
4. Students will be required to answer the following on paper as a paragraph. Students may write as many sentences as
needed to thoroughly answer all questions.
a. How can you tell something is an insect?
b. What are the three main body parts of an insect? Why are they important?
5. Students will be creating an advertisement for a product your insect produces to benefit society. Advertisements will
include:
- What the bug makes or provides for society
- A catchy slogan that represents the bug you created
- An explanation of the product and it’s benefit(s) to society.
- Presented as a drawing, newspaper ad, PowerPoint, commercial, or other teacher approved project
- Picture of insect that was created
