Lesson Invertebrates

1
What I need to know

Determine the distinguishing characteristics of invertebrates

What’s New

Animals have different classifications according to its characteristics.

VERTEBRATES are kind animals with backbone, which we learned in the previous lesson.
In this module, we are going to learn about INVERTEBRATES are kind of animals that do
not have backbones.

Invertebrates are classified into eight larger groups: Poriferans, Cnidarians,

Annelids, Mollusks, Echinoderms, Nematodes, Platyhelminthes and Arthropods each of
which has certain characteristics.

Figure 1. The Invertebrates

Look and study figure 1. These are some of the animals without backbone.
Do you know how are they classify? And what are their distinguishing characteristics?
Let’s explore and do the activities in the next page.
What is It!

Activity 1 What are invertebrates?

Read and study figure 2 then answer the questions below.

Write your answers in in your activity notebook.

Figure 2 Example of Invertebrate

Ant is an insect and invertebrate animal that belong to arthropods. Invertebrates

animals are animals without backbone, they live in every part of the world. In fact,
ninety-seven percent of all animal species on Earth are invertebrates.
So far, 1.25 million species have been described, most of which are insects, and
there are millions more to be discovered. The total number of invertebrate species
could be 5, 10, or even 30 million, compared to just 60,000 vertebrates.

Invertebrates come in all different shapes and sizes. Some can be seen only
through a microscope. Invertebrates are classified into eight larger groups:
Poriferans, Cnidarians, Annelids, Mollusks, Echinoderms, Nematodes,
Platyhelminthes and Arthropods. Each of which has certain characteristics,

QUESTIONS:

1. What is an invertebrate?
2. What kind of invertebrate is an ant?
3. How many percent of all animal species
on Earth are invertebrates?
4. How many jointed legs an ant has?
5. How many classifications of
invertebrates?
