State the Problem: How will acid rain affect the growth of any type of moss?

Research
How to make Acid Rain: 4 tsp of vinegar 2 liters water = acid rain (This is all we need because
you just water it with different amounts of acid rain and that is all we need to do in this
experiment) Give your moss a good watering every two days or so.
(Fun fact: a moss expert is called a Bryologist.)

Rationale:

We did this experiment because we want to learn more about moss and acid rain and
see how it can affect plants and how acid rain can hurt the environment and cause
changes to the food chain.

Hypothesis:
Kevin: I think that the normal water will make it grow faster, and water-acid will make it
grow slowest, and vinegar will make it die.
Mo-Lin: I think that the regular one will grow good, the acid rain slow acid vinegar slowest.
Delaney: I think that the vinegar will make the moss die because it is too acidic, and I think that
the acid rain will make the moss grow slower.
Julia: My hypothesis is that the moss will reject the acid and die. The acid rain will make the
moss die slowly.

Our supplies
Random moss on the school, they will not change if they are together, (any type of moss)
Vinegar {for acid rain}
Water [for acid rain]
Liter cup
Syringe
Safety goggles
Plastic cups
Our Plan:

Step one: Section off 2 patches of moss about 6 inches by 6 inches

Step two: Mix the 4 tsp vinegar with the 2 liters of water
Step three: Water the vinegar mixture on one moss patch and vinegar on the other patch.

Step four: Cover moss patches with Petri dishes and write “Weak” or “strong” for the acid and
the vinegar.
Step five: Every two days water the moss patches with the vinegar and acid.
Step six (Optional): give information to scientists studying moss.

Day 2

Kevin: The pure vinegar moss seems slightly brown to me.

Day 2 Pure Vinegar Moss

Day 2
Acid Rain Moss

Day Seven

Kevin: The vinegar moss is clearly brown all around, but acid is fine and normal is the same.

Mo-Lin: The vinegar moss is brown, and I think it has dead and the acid is not growing but fine and
normal is normal.
Julia: I think that the strong moss is dead because the acid is to acidic and the acid rain is slowly dying.

Day Nine
Julia:
Kevin: Okay, the vinegar is making the moss die, Acid: is slightly making it dark green instead
of green, it is barely noticeable
Molin: the vinegar is so dark I think it is dead and weak is not different.
Delaney: The strong moss is orange, and this is what will happen if acid rain keeps happening.
Day 9

Acid Rain Pure Balsamic Vinegar

Day 14:

Acid Rain Pure Balsamic Vinegar

The results: clearly affected but dead
The vinegar moss has turned orangish and brown and the acid moss has turned slightly
yellow.

My Conclusion:

Looking at our results, it is clear that our original hypothesis was correct. One way we know it is right is
that the vinegar moss died. We think this happened because it was too acidic for the moss. Another
interesting that that happened was that the acid rain moss did not really get hurt at all. I think this was
because it was not too acidic. In conclusion, it turns out that the acid moss did not change much but th
vinegar moss died. If I were to do this again, two things I would change would be; record the Ph and use
some other liquid.
