The awesome bird watching experiment!!!

Question: what time of day is best for bird watching?

Research: There are over 500 species of bird in Washington

Hypothesis: I think that there will be more birds in the afternoon because its warmer in the afternoon

Experiment:

Day one:

1. Grab binoculars
2. At 9:45 – 10:00 go outside and note how many birds you see
3. At 12:00 – 12:15 go outside and note how many birds you see
4. At 3:30 – 3:45 go outside and note how many birds you see

Day two:

1. Grab binoculars
2. At 9:45 – 10:00 go outside and note how many birds you see
3. At 12:00 – 12:15 go outside and note how many birds you see
4. At 3:30 – 3:45 go outside and note how many birds you see

Day three:

1. Grab binoculars
2. At 9:45 – 10:00 go outside and note how many birds you see
3. At 12:00 – 12:15 go outside and note how many birds you see
4. At 3:30 – 3:45 go outside and note how many birds you see

Results:

Morning (9:45 – 10:00) Noon (12:00 – 12:15) Afternoon (3:30 – 3:45)

Day one 27 birds 10 birds 29 birds
Day two 20 birds 20 birds 1 bird
Day three 20 birds 5 birds 4 birds
total 67 birds 35 birds 34 birds

Conclusion:

Looking at my results, my hypothesis was incorrect. One way I know it is wrong is because overall the
afternoon had the least amount of birds I saw, and the morning had the greatest amount of birds I saw. I think this
happened because in the morning its cool and damp which most bugs really like, and birds like to eat bugs. One
interesting thing that happened was that on the first day in the afternoon I saw 29 birds but then on days 2 and 3 in
the afternoon I saw 1 and 5 birds. I don’t know why this happened. In conclusion, the best time to go bird watching
is in the morning. If I were to do this again, two things I would change would be to test more times and do it over
the course of more days.
