Mysterious Verbum Strategy in Teaching Social Studies

I. Introduction

a. Background of the Title

The Mysterious verbum strategy, a strategy that will give a puzzling, excitements

curiosity, amazement at the students. In which helps them to drive creativity and inquisitiveness,

sparking desires to know what is the hidden word or verbum, verbum is Latin word for word or

phrase. This strategy will be better if given as a motivation to get the students attention. The

students need to be motivated at the start of the class, for them to adopt the initial task or

feeling of accomplishment and appreciating how ‘deferred gratification’ plays into the role of

education in order for them to work towards a greater and larger goal. The strategy came from a

fun game that apply to education.

b. Purpose of the Strategy

The purpose of this strategy is to help the students to understand the lesson, at

the same time the students are thrilled and entertain during the lesson. The students

can also develop their will to achieve things, the first step is to win the activity, in order

to that they must have wide imagination and vocabulary. Correspondently, they improve

their sense of teamwork because the Mysterious Verbum Strategy is done by group of

people that need their cooperation and collaboration. The most important phase of this

strategy, students will enhance their capability to consider and appreciate the different
perspectives of their peers. This will also enables the students to gain some new

learning from their peers and have clarification of their thought, may also acquire an

ability to understand their peer in non-verbal communication.

c. Related Strategy adopted

The Mysterious Verbum Strategy, is adopted from games that is fun and

entertaining using balloons. One of the game that this research adopted is called

Balloon Darts, wherein the tail of the balloon stick on the board or wall, the participants

will throw a dart towards the balloon standing on the mark spot. If the balloon hits by the

dart there is a certain prize. The other game that is related to the strategy is popping a

balloon with a fork, the balloons often slip away. The participants have a fork and when

the person say “Go!” they will popped the balloon and collect prizes that came off from

the balloon. This game should be done individually to avoid accidents, the person with

the most popped balloon wins, this is fun and frantic game. The last game is Pin the

diaper a fun game to play for a baby shower for the couple. Wherein the couple will pop

the balloon to reveal the gender of their baby, there is a colored confetti or powder

inside the balloon. There are plenty of fun balloon popping games that both children

and adults will love and the cost for supplies is cheap. To apply the game in the

classroom think things that children can learned while enjoying.


II. Procedure

2. How to use/apply the Mysterious Verbum Strategy

In applying the Mysterious Verbum strategy the teacher may group the

student’s into two groups up to four groups, each group that form will be better if they

will have a group name, that related to the topic or group name that the students desire.

Each group will have representatives up to how many the teacher wants, but it doesn’t

mean that the other member will not participate in the activity. The mechanics of the

strategy will be, at the start signal, the first representative must pop the balloon as

quickly as possible using a pins. When they have popped their balloon they must read

the word or phrase inside the balloon and act it in front of the members, and the

members will guess the word or phrase. The last representative should stop the timer if

the members guess the last word. The first team to guess all the words from the balloon

should shout their group name and stop the timer to win the activity. Be sure to clean up

and dispose all of the broken balloons carefully. Balloon rubber is harmful to wildlife and

also the pins it can harm the students.
