CHAPTER I

Rationale of the Study

Education is an activity or process, which modifies the behavior of a person

from instinctive to human behavior (Taneja, 2003, p.9). This definition reveals the

innate achievement, which is the manifestation of a student’s habit of study and

they in turn are formed and strengthened through education. The development of

good study habits is equally relative and helpful not only in academic work but in

career actualization and because this interrelationship cannot be overlooked, the

academic achievement and study habit of the student to a large extent culminates

into shaping an individual destiny. The general belief is that students who exercise

good study habits are likely to excel than those with poor study habits. (Sharma,

2005)

Achievement is generally a pedagogical terminology used while

determining learners’ success in formal education and which is measured through

reports examinations, researches, and ratings with numerous factors of variables

exerting influence. Essentially, the National Policy On education (Federal

Republic of Nigeria, 2004)

According to Vishwa Shanti Gurukul, 2008 some qualities an outstanding

student possessed by were self-discipline, maintaining your concentration when

working on tasks or in class, avoiding distractions during lectures or study

sessions, and making sure that you meet deadlines. It is a must student life.

Diligent a student should be determined towards studies or any works allotted to

him. Courteous, is showing politeness when it comes to one's attitude or behavior

towards others, otherwise known as manners. Using courteous words is the

practice of actions and other behaviors that respectable people will value. His

study has shown that learners who are more confident are more eager to Learn,

push themselves, and have stronger resilience during challenging transitions like

switching schools. Take full responsibility for your words and actions. In fact,

confidence has been cited as the best indicator of academic success. Give credit

for any sources you use in your homework and assignments. Never plagiarize or

steal intellectual/creative property from others. Do your homework on schedule,

and provide Give yourself a few additional days to study the completed work and

make any required changes, these are the same traits and behaviors that

characterize a learner. According to Reymolds and Walberg’s studies show of

academic achievement posits that psychological characteristic of individuals’

students and their immediate psychological environment influences educational

outcomes, Such as (cognitive behavior, attitudinal).

According to Schiro (2012), John Dewey he believed that human being

learns through a hand -on approach. This places Dewey in the belief that reality

must be experienced from Dewey’s educational point of view. This means the

children must interact with their environment in order to adapt and learned.

An a-list student required an Intellect above average, everybody who is

focused may be the best student. Just having the right mindset and working hard

will help (Abello, 2022). Abello identified 25 characteristics of a successful student

3
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

which includes the following: (1) Goal-driven; setting both short-term and long-

term goals can help you succeed. Depending on the given observation used at

your schools, simple objectives can include completing each quarter with a

minimum overall score of 90, 1.75, or A-. Long-term objectives can include

obtaining a Classical honor degree or at the very best graduating on schedule. (2)

You should always have some source of inspiration to maintain putting up your

best effort in your studies. The effort or sacrifices made by your parents to pay for

your education might be one. (3) Being diligent entails staying up later at night to

study and complete your work. You must, in essence, fight against laziness and

procrastination. (4) Working hard, which is a synonym for perseverance. You

won't quit up and accept mediocrity, no matter how difficult your topics or courses

are. To produce exceptional product or performance, you will constantly put up

sufficient or greater effort. 5) Punctual, an excellent student is never late. Although

being on time might be difficult to maintain, if you want to maximize your

academic success, you'll make an effort to get at school early. By doing this, you

will avoid making a poor first impression and not miss any important activities or

early quizzes. (6) Being courteous of your instructors, other students, and other

members of the school community shows that you are more than just a good

student; it shows that you are a good person. Thus, practice greeting everyone

you pass in the corridor or at the very least giving them a smile. (7) Tell your

cheating friends to go away since they don't make excellent pupils. Examinations

serve as learning assessments. This means that as long as you can evaluate how

much you have learned from a lesson; it is important if you don't obtain perfect

4
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

scores. (8) Team player; you commonly have to collaborate with your classmates

on projects. So, you must work with them if you want a successful outcome for

each performance. Your grades wouldn't improve if you competed with your group

members. (9) Resourceful people are those who can discover solutions when

there seems to be none. For example, you can reuse materials that could be used

to construct a project if you have the idea but lack the necessary money. (10),

Recitation, and class engagement all have a significant role on how well you do in

school. This is on you to overcome your shyness and be willing to take part in all

discussions and activities. (11) Organized, an excellent student makes sure that

everything—including time management and school-related tasks—is organized.

By doing this, you may prevent rushing and forgetting where you put your

homework. (12) Competitive; this does not refer to viewing your fellow students as

competitors. Being competitive, on the other hand, means you do not really give

up from any difficult assignments in your classes. If your teacher assigns a

challenging math problem, for example, you attempt to answer it yourself rather

than waiting for your classmates to figure it out. (13) Self-assured, you don't afraid

to share your opinions in class, take part in competitions, or become a member of

a group at school. You have self-confidence. (14) Approachable, A good student

is also an excellent socializer. The only thing that may prevent you from being

friends with your classmates is your perception of them as possible risks to your

goal of doing well in the class or your perception that you are not good enough to

be them friend. Both of them show insecurity. (15) Resourceful, as you do not yet

have a source of income, value every money that comes from your parents or

5
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

other sources of support. Alternatively, if you are working a part-time job only to

pay for school, you certainly realize how difficult it is to make money. (16) Be

patient; even if you're a brilliance, there may be situations when you find it hard to

understand certain topics or capabilities. Depending on how slowly things are

going, you must have patience in order to avoid getting impatient. It's important

that you never give up on learning and practicing new things. (17) If you're a good

follower, you should submit to the leadership of your group leader even if you

believe you are better to them. Also, you must be skilled at following to regulations

and following your teachers' directions. (18) Balanced, A good student is one who

has a wide range of interests. You should remember that you are also a kid, a

sibling, and a friend, among other roles in life. Make sure you can still assist with

house chores, spend time with your family, and sometimes spend time with your

friends. (19) Being responsible simply means that you do your schoolwork on

time, are able to review or study your material in advance of exam dates, and take

care of the responsibilities that your teacher or group members assign you. (20)

Self-reliant, An independent student shows personality. This means that you can

do your activities individually with no assistance. (21) Positive, you can’t deny that

the academically year will be problems. Keeping a positive perspective is the

greatest approach to make it through successfully and without experiencing

unnecessary pressure. Never give up, no matter how difficult it seems. A good

student possesses initiative, according to verse 22. When the teacher asks for

volunteer for an activity, you volunteer to start it, give ideas to the group, and

clean up the room. (23) Teachable, if you believe you already know everything,

6
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

you are not truly a student. Being teachable is having the humility to accept

corrections and seek assistance if you are unable to completely understand a

lesson. (24) Disciplined, you must be laser-focused on your goals if you want to

be a top student. To provide more time to your studies, this includes putting a

limitation on things like television, social media, and other pastimes. (25)

prayerfully, if you think God is the one who gave you the chance to attend school,

don't forget to give thanks to Him. Also, you may lean on Him for continuous

Guidance and strength in all that you do.

The objectives of this study are the following:

1. To identify what are the learning qualities and study habits of an

outstanding student.

2. To know the importance of having a good study habit.

3. To adopt some qualities and practices of an outstanding student.

Theoretical Framework

The theoretical framework is the structure that can hold or support a theory

of a research study. The theoretical framework introduces and describes the

theory which explains why the research problem under study exists.

Performance theory

Elger created the theory of performance in the classroom (ToP) (2007).

In order to create a framework that can be utilized to explain performance as well

as performance enhancements, the theory places a strong emphasis on six

fundamental ideas. To perform is to achieve worthwhile outcomes. A performer

7
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

might be a single person or a team of persons working together. Performance

level represents where a person is on the process of developing their

performance. The context, level of knowledge, level of skills, level of identity,

personal variables, and fixed elements are the six aspects that collectively make

up the current level of performance. For practical performance improvements,

three principles are put out. They include adopting the attitude of a performer,

immersing oneself in dynamic surroundings, and engaging in critical thinking.

Performance refers to a student's capacity to finish a job. The outcomes of the

task completion might be either positive or negative. Academic performance

varies between the first and third classes in private institutions, which is

uncommon in research schools. If the outcome is positive, it means the student

performed excellently or effectively; otherwise, if the result is negative, it means

the student performed poorly. Student performance is the result of a proper review

using exams or other techniques of assessment. Performance standards are

established from the first day a student is on campus and continue and increase

throughout their academic career.

Dewey theory
Dewey (2012) was a person who believes in the "hands-on" method of

learning. This positions Dewey inside the pragmatism-based educational

philosophy. Reality must be experienced, according to psycholinguistics. Dewey's

theory of education holds that for children to adapt and learn, they must engage in

interactions with their surroundings. Dewey, who is widely mentioned as one of

the greatest philosophers of the 20th century, strongly influenced psychology,

8
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

education, and philosophy. His concentration on progressive education made a

significant contribution to understanding through experiment rather than an

authoritarian one. In addition, Dewey wrote a lot. (Dec. 12 2020)

Vygotsky's Theory

Vygotsky's (2021) social development theory asserts that a child's cognitive

development and learning ability can be guided and mediated by their social

interactions. His theory (also called Vygotsky's sociocultural theory) states that

learning is a crucially social process as opposed to an independent journey of

discovery. He expands on this by stating that a child's learning benefitted greatly

from being guided by a more knowledgeable member of the community - such as

a parent or teacher. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory also suggested that children

internalize and learn from the beliefs and attitudes that they witness around them.

He believed that culture played an important role in shaping cognitive

development and therefore that this development varied across cultures. Vygotsky

also stressed the importance of language as the root of all learning. This theory is

not limited to academic or educational learning, it can also be applied to

recreational learning such as playing games or using technology. In these

circumstances, a peer or older child is more likely to be the more knowledgeable

other.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

A review of related literature (RRL) is a detailed review of existing literature

related to the topic of a thesis or dissertation. In an RRL, the researcher talks

about knowledge and findings from existing literature relevant to this topic.

Foreign Literature

Vygotsky's sociocultural studies about child development says that

cognitive development occurs as a result of social interactions. In this way,

learning is innately collaborative. He believed social negotiation was essential for

building knowledge and understanding concepts. Vygotsky proposed that it was

not possible to separate learning in the formative years from its social context.

Initial learning occurred through social interaction and then the individual

processed it internally. Contemporary modes of applying this theory to the

classroom mark a movement away from traditional memory-oriented models of

teaching. 'Reciprocal teaching' refers to a method in which teachers and students

work together to clarify and understand a concept before students are asked to

repeat it or apply it in another context. For example, if a teacher is reading a

paragraph of text on a certain topic, they will go through a process together with

the students of: Summarizing, Questioning, clarifying; and

Predicting. Vygotsky's 2021.

Positive Personality Qualities Education. The State Board of Education

(SBOE) is required by Texas Education Code (TEC) 29.906 to appropriately

include good character qualities and personal skills into the core knowledge and

skills approved for kindergarten through grade 12. According to the law,

instruction must also include the following positive characteristics traits and life

skills: courage, trustworthiness, integrity, respect, and courtesy. Accountability,

diligence, perseverance, self-management abilities, and self-control are also parts

of responsibility.

Rundown of Good Student Characteristics updated on April 13, 2022

Mautushi Paul, Child Study 4. The top ten characteristics of a good student and

why they are essential in life. The education of your child is the most crucial thing.

You are aware that being a student is not important for parents to understand

what makes a good student. Discipline, attention, organization, and resilience are

the four main qualities of a good student that will be covered in this article piece of

writing. Responsibility also involves accountability, 10 best qualities of a good

student; discipline, a good student is disciplined, diligence, persistence, self-

management skills, and self-control. They recognize the importance of their

education and are motivated to put aside other activities in order to emphasis on

it.

According to (Linda Stade August 12, 2022), A good student is someone

who does more than just get good grades. It requires a desire to advance and

advance intellectually as well as a love of learning and a passion for information.

What qualities and practices characterize an excellent learner, then? The list that

follows is by not very extensive, but it is a great place to start. A growth mindset

is a strong belief that anything can be learned with enough time and effort.
18
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

According to (Carol Dweck, 2020) She is the most well-known expert on

the mentality attribute in the entire planet. Dweck discussed development

mentality in terms of "The power of yet" in her 2014 Ted address. You must follow

up when your kid says, "I can't do this, yet. I still can't do this. According to

Dweck's research, merely introducing this idea to a youngster will change how

they see their learning. She cites research to support her claim that adopting a

growth mindset alters brain pathways to promote better learning growth.

Development mentality in the classroom. A good student is brave, a good student

is organized, good student is consistent and persistent, a good student is able to

deal with failure, a good student sets goals, a good student is able to connect

learning to life, a good student knows how to look after their mental health, a

good student partners with teachers and a good student values education Finally,

if a child is to achieve success in education, they need to value education. In life,

we very rarely persist or strive in an endeavor if we don’t think it is valuable.

Studies show that children are more likely to embrace education and succeed in

homes where education is valued, where there are books and where parents are

engaged in learning.

Local Literature

Student academic success in virtual formats remained a primary concern

for educational policy leaders. Many of the initial findings centered on post-

secondary programs. Though such studies provided insights, differences in

educational maturity between children and adults were not addressed. Although

adult learners are motivated by internal factors, making online delivery an

19
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

excellent resource for that population, youth generally derive their motivation from

external sources (Knowles, 1990).

According to (Gilbert C. Magulod Jr., 2018) the development of a country

is dependent on the capability of its human resources. The knowledge and

technological advancement of society depend on the quality and preparation of

manpower who have sound technical understanding, personal and interpersonal

skills as scientists and technologist. As such, it is of utmost importance that the

highest standards are set in defining the objectives, components, and processes

for Information technology and industrial technology programs of higher

education institutions. Knowledge and education are common goods. The

acquisition and application of knowledge is a part of collective societal endeavor

(UNESCO, 2015). The need to produce competent graduates in their specific

discipline who possessed the skills and attributes to deal with the ever-changing

work environment in the 21st century is a herculean task assigned to HEIs in the

Philippines (Magulod, 2017a, 2017b). One of the important steps to undertake to

ensure quality and optimal learning experience among university students is to

consider their different learning styles and preferences. Learning style refers to

how students learn and process information in their own ways.

SYNTHESIS

According to researcher, merely introducing this idea to a youngster will

CHAPTER III

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The general purpose of the study was to determine the learning qualities

and study habits of outstanding student.

Specifically, it sought to describe the respondents’ profile in terms of a age,

sex, grade level and general average. The learning qualities and study habits

shown of an outstanding student; to determine the learning qualities and study

habits of an outstanding student; and to propose a plan of action based on the

results of the study.

METHODOLOGY

The methods used in this research study are presented in the following

paragraphs. The sample size and instruments the researcher will used to gather

data are also included. To create a reliable questionnaire, a thorough discussion

on research instrument development was conducted. In the last part of this

chapter, the statistical techniques that will be used to examine the data are also

covered.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The primary goal of this study is to identify the learning qualities and study

habits and how did they differ to profile of the respondents. The researchers used

a Descriptive-correlation design, thus quantitative research methods used design

22

which maximize objectivity by using numbers, statistics, and experimental control.

Descriptive research studies are those studies which are concerned with

describing the characteristics of a particular individual or of group (Kothari,

2009:37).

Based on its quantitative approach the study is a descriptive research. It

was decided on the basis of the nature of the research problem. Descriptive

research methods according to Best and khan (2009, p. 133), “deal with the

relationship among non-manipulated variables, because the events or conditions

have already occurred, the researcher merely selects the relevant variables for

an analysis of their relationships. The researcher start with the observation of

dependent variable(s), and then studies the independent variables in retrospect

seeking for their possible effects on the dependent variables(s)”.

The researcher primary tool was the questionnaires decided to find out the

respondent’s study practices. The survey is used to present, analyze, and

evaluate the researcher’s findings based on the participants of the study.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

Population/Participants

The respondents in this study were 100 outstanding students from grade 7

to grade 12. The 100 respondents were the total population of DULAG NATIONAL

HIGH SCHOOL outstanding student. In choosing the outstanding students as the

respondents, taken into consideration their availability and interest in the study.

respondents for our study. They are the only ones with the knowledge necessary

to provide answer to our investigation. They provided the necessary information

by responding to the questionnaire we gave them. In this approach, the

researchers hope to their respondents to participate those who are good student

or outstanding student. We are conducting a survey questionnaire with 100

participants that will serve as our study’s respondents to learn more about their

perspectives.

their discretion to choose variables for the sample population. Here, the entire

sampling process depends on the researcher’s judgment and knowledge of the

context. Based on the overall proportions of the population, you calculate how

many people should be sampled from each subgroup. Then you use random or

systematic sampling to select a sample from each subgroup. Purposive sampling

The Dulag National High School has 1362 students’ Junior high school and Senior

High School students. We ensured that the sample are all outstanding student,

the researchers chose outstanding student in Dulag national high school from

grade 7 up to grade 12 as our respondents. Then we use random sampling in all

grade level we had 100, which is our representative sample of 100 people.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

Questionnaires were self-made and based on the group 6 in Practical

Research HUMSS 12 students. The first part of the questionnaire revealed the

profile of the respondents with respect to gender, age, grade level and general

average of outstanding students; the second part of the questionnaire is shown

the learning qualities and study habits of an outstanding students and the last

part of a questionnaire is talks about the difference between learning qualities

and also the study habits to the demographic profile of outstanding student of

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

The data for this study was collected using a google form and personal

survey questionnaires that distributed to the outstanding students of dulag

national high school who were asked to complete the questionnaires provided by

the researchers. Seeking a permission to conduct a study. The researchers initial

task was obtain authorization from the HUMSS students to deliver the

questionnaire to the respondents. The researcher would explain to the respondent

the importance of their responses to the study. The researcher clarifies some

terms to the respondents so that the respondents answered the questionnaire

with full knowledge of their responsibility as the subject of the study. The

researchers would request the respondents answered the questionnaire. The

researcher collected the data for interpretation.

The researcher asks that the respondents respond honestly. The researchers

collected and organized the answered questionnaires once the respondents

provided them. The researcher analyzes the respondent’s responses as

numerical data.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT DATA

The statistical treatment of data is the transformation of raw data into

something that can be understood and used for decision making. The type of

experiment and the intended outcome of the experiment have a significant impact

on how the data are statistically treated. For instance, factors like age, sex, grade

level, general average etc. It would be significant in determining a person’s

decision to vote for a particular situation in a survey regarding to learning qualities

and study habits of outstanding students of dulag national high school.

FOR PROBLEM #1

Percentage, the demographic profile variables of the respondents were analyzed

using simples’ percentages.

Frequency, these tools facilitate the tallying and counting the frequencies based

on each item and categories.

Formula:
P=___f___ x 100
N
Where:
P= percentage
- Is the total respondent.
f= frequency
- Is the subgroup population
N= number of respondents
- Total population
Weighted mean, it is used to determine the indicators under learning qualities and
study habits of outstanding student of Dulag national high school.
X=∑X/N
Wherein:
∑X = sum of a quantitative variables
N = total sample size

P value, is defined as the probability under the assumption of no effect or no

difference (null hypothesis), of obtaining a result equal to or more extreme than

what was actually observed.

R value, is a common way to indicate a correlation value. More specifically, it

refers to the (sample) Pearson correlation, or Pearson's r.

Pearson r, is the most common way of measuring a linear correlation. It is a

number between –1 and 1 that measures the strength and direction of the

relationship between two variables.

T test, is a statistical test that is used to compare the means of two groups. It is

often used in hypothesis testing to determine whether a process or treatment

actually has an effect on the population of interest, or whether two groups are

different from one another.

Likert Scale

Respond were given a chance to rate each statement in the questionnaires.

Their answer were given a corresponding number as follows:

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the data gathered, the results of the statistical

analysis done and interpretation of findings. These are presented in tables

following the sequence of the specific research problem regarding to the

“Learning Qualities and Study Habits of Outstanding Student of Dulag National

High School".

The first problem of the study focuses on the profile of the

outstanding student in dulag national high school. The profile of the respondents

was tabulated and computed according to the following: age, sex, grade level, and

general average.

Table 1 present the age of the outstanding student in dulag national high

school.

Table 1: Age of the Respondents

AGE f %

16-17 40 40
18-19 24 24
20 and above 2 2

30
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

Under the age of 16-17, it got the highest frequency 40 and a percentage of 24

while, 20 and above to get the Lowest frequency of 2 and a percentage of 2. This

implies that age ranging 16-17 is more dominant compared to the 20 and above.

Eric Erickson stated that the individual has hopefully developed a stable identity,

he or she moves into the adult world seeking a partner with whom to share work,

sex, friendship and intimate feeling.

Table 1.2 present the sex of the outstanding student in dulag national high school

Table 1.2: Sex of the Respondents

SEX f %
Male 36 36
Female 64 64

On the other hand, in sex, female got the highest frequency of 64 with a

percentage of 64 while, male got the frequency of 36 with a percentage of 36.

This indicates that female is more compared to male. Panopio (2006), he

reiterated that female is more focus in their study. It has been said that they are

more conscious they are student oriented.

Table 1.3 on the next page present the grade level of the outstanding

student in dulag national high school.

However, in grade level grade 10 respondents got the highest frequency of 35

with a percentage of 20 while, grade 8 got the Lowest frequency of 5 with a

percentage of 21. This implies that the grade 10 is committed to give basic

necessity or psychological needs. They tend to find other ways to adapt a good

characteristic as a good student. Reyes (2000) stated that Good student

experiencing some difficulties in their lives because of these difficulties they tend

to find some alternative to be able your success.

Table 1.4 present the general average of the outstanding student in dulag

national high school.

In general average 90-100 got the highest frequency of 100 with a

percentage of 100. This implies that the 90-100 dominates general average in the

dulag national high school. These findings can be supported through observation

and statistics that the majority of the dulag national high school students believe

to be one of an outstanding student. The ways of acting, feeling or thinking that

show the disposition or the opinion of a person (Phillip, 2007).

The second problem of this study dealt on the learning qualities of an

outstanding student of Dulag NHS as perceived by the respondents.

Table 2 on the next page presents the perception of the respondents on

the learning qualities of an outstanding student of Dulag National Highschool.

It can be gleaned in the table that the respondents perceived the

learning qualities of an outstanding student of Dulag NHS is high with the overall

average weighted mean of 2.61 as reflected. This implies that outstanding of

dulag national high school is satisfied with the performance of the outstanding

student. As we interviewed the selected student of dulag national high school they

said that outstanding student is totally exerting their efforts to do their role as a

student of dulag national high school.

AWM 2.61 Always

In the study of Vishwa shanti Gurukul, et. al., (2008), they also got the

same perception of the respondent most particularly on the part of the community/

stakeholder. They pointed out that the demand of safety is very high and because

of this demand they come up into recommendation that the qualities possessed

by good students are develop as winning personalities.

It can be noted in the table that responsible to finish my requirements on

time, initiative to do my activities, assignment and projects, good follower to my

parent, teacher, and classmate, happy to be independent doing my activities,

homework, and projects, disciplined student in our school, participate in class by

answering their question about on our lesson, patiently study even its difficult to

understand, work in order to finish the assigned task on time, set goals as I need

to pursue, use my loved ones as inspiration to graduate, a good person inside and

outside of school, collaborate and work with my classmate for our projects, recite

and willing to take part in all discussion and activities, balance my role as student

and as a sibling, spend time with my family and with my friends, never give up, no

matter how difficult my school works, open minded to new learnings, telling the

truth and not cheating during exams, and pray to God before reporting in front

and taking exams are high as reflected in each weighted mean of 2.52 to 2.85,

respectively. These indicate that the outstanding student are having these

learning qualities. However, the outstanding student did not get the highest rate

which is (3) always. This implies that there is lacking on the part of the

outstanding student. Hence, they imposed outstanding students to motivate other

students.

On the other hand, doing unnecessary things while on learning process

(e.g. competitive inside and outside the classroom to have high grade.) are low as

35
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

reflected in its weighted mean of 2.26 and got the lowest average weighted mean.

This implies that the outstanding student may not be compete to other students

for high grades.

The third problem of this study dealt on the study habits of an

outstanding students as perceived by the respondents.

Table 3 on the next page presents the perception of the respondents on

how they concentrate to their studies as an outstanding student in dulag national

high school. It can be gleaned in the table that the respondents perceived the

study habits of an outstanding students in dulag national high school is high with

the average weighted mean of 4.31 as reflected.

4.49, respectively. These indicate that the outstanding student are doing their best

in dulag national high school. However, the others did get the highest rate which

is strongly agree. This implies that there is a study habits of outstanding student of

dulag national high school. Grace (2013) also maintains that the process of

learning is still a little mysterious but studies do show that the most effective

process for studying involves highly active behavior over a period of time. In other

words, to study effectively, one must read, draw, compare, memorize and test

himself over time.

Table 3.1 on the next page presents the perception of the respondents on

how they manage their time when it comes to study as an outstanding students in

dulag national high school. It can be gleaned in the table that the respondents

perceived the study habits of an outstanding students in dulag national high

school is high with the average weighted mean of 4.28 as reflected. Improvement

of study habits of the students is necessary so that they perform well in their

studies. Bajwa and Jindail (2005) concluded that there is significant difference

between high Socio-economic Status and low Socio-economic Status on the

variable of under achievement.

(2019) Considering the importance of study skills and habits of students, and the

important role they play in the academic achievement of students, and taking into

account that study habits vary from person to person and from place to place, and

also as the results of related studies are different from each other, the present

study was designed and implemented.

Table 3.3 presents the perception of the respondents on how they take

Study habits are well planned and deliberate pattern of study which has

attained a form of consistency on the part of the students towards understanding

academic subjects and passing the examination (Bashir & Mattoo, 2012).

TEST OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE STUDENTS’ LEARNING

QUALITIES AND THEIR SECOND QUARTER AVERAGE

The fourth problem of this study dealt on the significant difference between the

learning qualities and demographic profile as shown in table 5.

42
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

To determine if Pearson-r correlation is applicable, we test first if the data are

normally distributed. Using the One-Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test of

Normality in SPSS, the p-value obtained for the mean score of the students’

learning qualities is greater than 0.05 ( p=0.235) which makes it normally

distributed. However, for the students’ second quarter average, the p-value

obtained is less than 0.05 ( p=0.010) which makes it not normally distributed.

Therefore, Pearson-r correlation is not applicable, instead, we use the Spearman

correlation. Figure 1 shows the result after applying the Spearman correlation in

SPSS.

Figure 1. Spearman correlation of the mean score of students’ learning qualities

and their second quarter average

Since p>0.05( p=0.384), then we accept Ho. Therefore, there is no significant

correlation between the students’ learning qualities and their second quarter

average.

43
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

There was a negligible correlation (r =−0.088) between the students’ learning

qualities and their second quarter average. This means that changes in one

variable are not correlated to the other variable.

On the other hand, it can be noted in the table the respondents who

accept the perceptions of the respondents on the learning qualities. Learning style

is defined as the characteristics, strengths, and preferences in the way how

people receive and process information (Hsieh, Jang, Hwang & Chen, 2011)

IS THERE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STUDY HABITS AMONG

THE DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS OF DULAG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The fifth problem of this study dealt on the significant difference between

study habits and demographic profile of outstanding student of dulag national high

school as shown in table 6.

It can be inferred in the table that the computed P value of 0.050033 is

outside the critical region of 1.658, therefore, the null hypothesis which states that

“there is no significant difference between the study habits and grade 7

outstanding student of dulag national high school” is accepted, meaning, the

perceptions of the two groups do not significantly differ.

Study habits 100 1.1811 -2.18 1.657 126 0.050004 Not Significant Accept
Grade 12 28 3.36

However, it can be inferred in the table that the computed P value of

0.049978 is outside the critical region of 1.66, therefore, the null hypothesis which

states that “there is significant difference between the study habits and grade 8

outstanding student of dulag national high school” is rejected, meaning, the

perceptions of the two groups significantly differ.

Moreover, it can be noted in the table that the computed P value of

0.050046 is outside the critical region of 1.658, therefore, the null hypothesis

which states that “there is no significant difference between the study habits and

grade 9 outstanding student of dulag national high school” is accepted, meaning,

the perceptions of the two groups do not significantly differ.

However , it can be gleaned in the table that the computed P value of

0.050031 is outside the critical region of 1.656, therefore, the null hypothesis

which states that “there is no significant difference between the study habits and

grade 10 outstanding student of dulag national high school” is accepted, meaning,

the perceptions of the two groups do significantly differ.

45
Dulag National High School

Dulag, Binmaley, Pangasinan

Hence, it can be gleaned in the table that the computed P value of

0.050299 is outside the critical region of 1.656, therefore, the null hypothesis

which states that “there is no significant difference between the study habits and

grade 11 outstanding student of dulag national high school” is accepted, meaning,

the perceptions of the two groups do significantly differ.

Lastly , it can be gleaned in the table that the computed P value of

0.050004 is outside the critical region of 1.657, therefore, the null hypothesis

which states that “there is no significant difference between the study habits and

grade 12 outstanding student of dulag national high school” is accepted, meaning,

the perceptions of the two groups do significantly differ.

Since, the findings have significant difference between study habits and

different grade levels of outstanding student of dulag national high school, this

implies that the respondents have this study habits. Little study has been done

looking at the learning habits of students at any level of the education system

especially in Asia, much which is directed to mainly the western countries. Sawar

et al. (2009, p.204) acknowledge the fact that, “since we live in the information of

grade levels, this fact clearly makes new demand on the educational system,

requiring radical changes on „what‟ and „how‟ pupils learn and why students are

not doing as per expectations.” It is important to have a clear understanding of

what benefits or hinders one’s educational achievement. This is the premise on

which this study is justified.

CHAPTER V

Summary of findings, Conclusion, and Recommendation

This chapter presented the summary of findings, conclusion and

Recommendation of the study about the learning qualities and study habits of

outstanding student of dulag national high school.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The main purpose of the study was to determine the learning qualities and
